Health Unit Coordinator - ICU @ Swedish First Hill
12 Hour Shifts
Day shift
Swedish $0 premium plan Full-time caregivers (0.75-1.0 FTE) who earn less than $60,000 per year will be offered the Swedish PPO medical plan with a $0 premium cost, including dependent coverage. Responsibilities:
- Perform general secretarial and clerical duties in the patient care areas.
- Interact with patients, families, and physicians, acting as a liaison among members of the health care team.
- Assist nursing staff in coordinating unit activities.
- Oversee the orderliness of work areas and order forms and other clerical supplies.
General Customer Service:
- Greet visitors, providing information and assistance as needed.
- Work with patients, families, visitors, and physicians to identify needs, resolve problems, and provide information.
- Facilitate patient movement to other departments.
- Answer call lights and phone calls, providing patient assistance as appropriate.
- Issue visitor passes/Identification per unit protocols and arrange for interpreter services.
New Admissions, Transfer & Discharge Activities:
- Prepare a paper chart and print stickers from electronic medical record for each new patient.
- Provide welcome brochures and check printer for the admission medication list.
- Send discharge medication orders to pharmacy as applicable.
- Order prior medical records when necessary and check unoccupied rooms for readiness.
Electronic Medical Record (EMR):
- Perform all ADT (admission, discharge, and transfer) functions.
- Prepare charts for transfer and discharge, ensuring accommodation codes are correct.
- Manage bed board and review orders for upcoming tests, communicating priority to nursing staff.
- Enter non-medication verbal orders during emergencies and assist staff and physicians with EMR as needed.
Environment of Care & Regulatory Readiness:
- Instruct families and visitors in hand hygiene protocols.
- Participate in patient/family education to unit practices/routines.
- Ensure hallways are clear and equipment is plugged in.
- Keep work area clean and clutter-free.
- Post signs for hand hygiene, NPO, and free water restriction as appropriate.
Other Duties:
- Give report to relief staff, updating patient assignment board.
- Assign pagers and locators to nursing staff and maintain unit worksheets.
- Order supplies from MSC, Nutrition, etc., as necessary.
- Communicate with other hospital departments regarding concerns with faulty equipment or work orders.
Required Qualifications:
- 1 year of experience in a related healthcare setting, completion of a Health Unit Coordinator program, or 3 months in a Swedish internship program.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience using electronic medical records.
