Under the general supervision of the Veterinarian, the purpose of the position is to perform a variety of veterinary procedures on both domestic and livestock in the clinic environment and in the field. Employee functions at entry level to assist the contracted veterinarian and the Operations Manager and support efficient and effective veterinary care within the department. Position assists the Veterinarian in maintaining accurate animal files, proper vet care and assistance with rescue coordination.

- Provides for the general health and overall welfare of small animals and large domestic animals and livestock, e.g., dogs, cats, cows, horses.
- Performs veterinary-related duties with moderately complex medical procedures; assists with the restraint of animals during medical treatments/procedures.
- Performs routine medical treatments, e.g., draw blood, administer injections/vaccinations, administer blood tests, dispense medication.
- Maintains a sanitary and orderly clinical environment; assists with maintaining animal facilities; cleans and disinfects animal cages and equipment.
- Assists in the preparation, administering and recovery of animals from surgical procedures, e.g., preps and sterilizes animals for surgery; assists in surgery; monitors animal vital signs during surgery and recovery from anesthesia; reports any anomalies to the on-site Veterinarian.
- Reads and interprets various machines used to monitor animal vital signs, e.g., autoclave, anesthetic machine, respiratory monitor, ultrasonic cleaner.
- Maintains clinic administrative paperwork and animal health records; performs related administrative duties as directed by the Veterinarian.
- Monitors safety and security of holding facilities; ensures all quarantined animals are maintained in designated areas; prevents access to animals impounded for aggression or biting as defined by department operating procedures.
- Assists the general public with adoption processes; speaks with the public regarding new adopted pets; advises citizens on the responsibility of animal ownership.
- Reports any issues or concerns to the Veterinarian, Operations Manager, and Director; assists in the resolution of clinic concerns.
- Must perform euthanasia after completing certification course.
- Assists in departmental community awareness seminars, attends local school events and other local community events for the purpose of educating the public on animal-related issues.
- Assists in creating informational education programs in conjunction with the goals and objectives of the department.
- At the direction of the Veterinarian assists with evaluating the health and behavior of incoming animals to determine final disposition within the department, i.e., adoptable, medical hold, and rescue.
- Embraces a "one team" approach to accomplish daily tasks, goals and projects by interacting, cooperating, assisting, training and learning from volunteers.
- Performs duties as assigned/necessary which are related, or logical in assignment to the position.
Education: High School Diploma or GED.
Experience: One (1) year demonstrated experience providing for the general welfare of animals, and the ability to assist in veterinary treatments/procedures or an equivalent combination of education, and/or experience may be considered.
Requirements:
- Must be inoculated against rabies.
- Must successfully complete Euthanasia Certification within one (1) year of employment.
Miscellaneous:
- Must possess and maintain a valid FL Driver's License.
- Ability to communicate in English is required and Spanish is a plus.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- General knowledge of and the desire to work with animals; knowledge of techniques utilized in the handling of animals.
- Ability to perform routine medical treatments, e.g., draws blood, administers injections/vaccinations, performs blood tests, dispenses medication.
- Ability to render quick, responsible decision making, under stressful and emotional circumstances.
- Ability to operate basic office equipment, e.g., computer terminals, printers, copy machines, telephone systems, facsimile machines.
- Ability to read, update and maintain various records and files; ability to access, operate and maintain various software applications.
- Skill in clearly communicating information both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications with County personnel, government agencies, law enforcement, volunteers, civic groups, and the general public.
PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS:
Physical Demand: Medium
- 50 pounds maximum lifting.
- Frequent (up to 2/3 of the work time) lifting, carrying up to 25 lbs.
- Expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word or perceiving sound by ear.
- Good eyesight for production or safety of self and others.
- Physical demand requirements are more than medium work.
- Physical agility is required in kneeling, bending, stooping, and reaching.
