Job Description - Physician Assistant - Asthma Research Center (3309164)
The Physician Assistant in the Severe Asthma Center and BWH Asthma Research Center (ARC) spends about half their time in clinical activity and half their time in the ARC. The Ambulatory Physician Assistant (PA) in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine is responsible for assisting physicians at the BWH Asthma Research Center by contributing clinical expertise to the management of severe asthma patients and the center’s research studies. There is an opportunity to be part of original research if desired.
The PA is a licensed provider with a broad range of knowledge and skills acquired through a physician assistant program. Responsibilities include assessment and management of patients, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, implementation and evaluation of care plans, and ongoing evaluation. The PA collaborates with attending physicians and reports to both the Asthma Research Center Director and department administrator or chief physician assistant. The PA participates in the management, coordination, and transition of care of patients in the outpatient setting.
The PA sees ambulatory patients independently and is expected to have four (4), 4-hour clinic sessions per week. The PA will perform duties in accordance with all state and federal regulations and institutional policies, including but not limited to BWH PA Scope of Practice, Prescriptive Guidelines, and approved clinical privileges.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Research Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in evaluation and recruitment of potential study subjects
- Perform pre-visit record evaluation with assessment and decisions regarding additional diagnostic evaluations
- Contact patients to review history and records, clarifying additional testing and scheduling
- Assist with study procedures as needed
- Obtain consent from subjects for research participation
- Administer drugs as necessary, including parenteral medications
- Conduct patient visits for urgent follow-up
- Evaluate adverse events and provide medical advice regarding follow-up
- Assist in administrative management of the Research Center
- Perform quality control audits of study data
- Evaluate proposed clinical protocols for feasibility
- Contribute to research studies, grant proposals, and IRB protocols
- Additional lab and research duties as required
Clinical Responsibilities
Practice
- See ambulatory patients in collaboration with Center providers and independently
- Expected to have four (4), 4-hour clinic sessions per week
Coordination
- Facilitate continuity and transition of care
- Establish collaborative relationships with other providers
- Ensure patient charts are complete before appointments
- Collaborate with Patient Program Manager to track patient progress
- Coordinate EPIC modifications for quality care
Non-Clinical Duties and Responsibilities
- Demonstrate professional collaborative relationships with providers
- Follow prescriptive practices and monitoring requirements
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives
- Attend required meetings, in-services, and professional trainings
- Maintain superior interpersonal and communication skills

- Demonstrate understanding of procedures and documentation for compliance
Education and Planning
Education
- Act as preceptor for staff as requested
- Educate trainees including medical students and residents
- Participate in orientation of new staff
- Participate in continuing education programs
- Identify learning needs and update clinical knowledge
- Educate groups through lectures and publications
Planning
- Develop annual objectives with PA Director and collaborating MD
- Assist in determining clinical area goals and objectives
- Maintain interdisciplinary approach for patient care planning
- Stay informed of legislation affecting health care delivery

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work settings will include ambulatory clinics with exposure to loud noises, noxious odors, and temperature extremes. The PA may be required to lift equipment and patients. Exposure to radiation, infectious bodily fluids, and sharp instruments is possible. Knowledge of Universal Precautions is required.
While the PA can expect a predictable work schedule, scheduling variations may occur. The PA may be asked to pick up additional shifts or provide backup coverage as needed.
- Must have completed a graduate level physician assistant program accredited by ARC-PA.
- Certification by the NCCPA must be obtained prior to employment.
- Must hold a current valid license or be eligible for licensure in Massachusetts.
- Must have or be eligible for a current DEA registration and Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration.
- Must complete 100 hours of CME every two years.
- Must complete the BWH Professionalism Program within three months of hire.
- Must complete BWH Procedural Sedation Training if necessary.
