RESIDENTIAL CHILDCARE SPECIALIST

Residential Childcare Specialists assigned to Polinsky Children’s Center receive an additional 10% above the base salary.
Residential Childcare Specialist positions are assigned to the Polinsky Children's Center, a 24-hour facility for the temporary emergency shelter for children who must be separated from their families for their own safety, or when parents cannot provide care. To be considered, you must be willing to work a variety of shifts including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Under general supervision, incumbents perform the full range of duties involved with the care and assessment of children who are in protective custody in residential cottages at the Polinsky Children's Center. Residential Childcare Specialists work with children in all age groups, but especially those under six (6) years of age.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The completion of twelve (12) units from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in child development, and/or early childhood education, of which three (3) semester units, or equivalent quarter units, includes coursework in the care of infants, AND, three (3) semester units or equivalent quarter units, includes coursework in abused and drug-exposed children; AND
- One (1) year of experience as a Residential Care Worker I with the County of San Diego, OR
- Two (2) years of work experience providing care and supervision to children in a 24-hour residential facility, a licensed day care program, or a licensed after school program for youth.
Fifteen (15) units from an accredited U.S college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in social work, child development, a closely related behavioral science field, or criminal justice may substitute for six (6) months of experience.
- Qualifying experience includes experience as a school teacher instructing teens and/or children.
- Babysitting experience or experience providing care for one's own children or care of children in an unlicensed facility is not considered qualifying.

INTERVIEWS AND HIRING PROCESS
Interviews will take place on TBD, 2024. The department will be reaching out to candidates to invite them to participate in an interview. Job offers for selected candidates will be made shortly after the interviews. Candidates should be prepared to immediately complete background paperwork, upon receipt of a job offer.

Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of background or other mutually agreed upon date.
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
As part of the County of San Diego’s pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.
EVALUATION PROCESS
Qualified applicants will be placed on a three (3) month eligible list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in the supplemental questionnaire.
