Animal Shelter Veterinarian are eligible for a one-time signing incentive of $9,500 upon hire.
Under general supervision, to provide professional medical care, diagnosis, and treatment to animals housed at the Animal Shelter; and perform related work as required.
Responsibilities include:
- Providing lead direction to staff responsible for following prescribed treatment and maintaining treatment records for animals.
- Ensuring the highest level of service and care are provided and that changes in animals’ conditions are recorded and properly addressed.
- Assisting in the development and implementation of goals, policies, and procedures for the facility.
- Examining and evaluating animals, and performing veterinary medical and surgical procedures, including vaccinations and preventative treatment.
- Performing surgical sterilization of animals, including pediatric and high volume spay/neuter.
- Coordinating with local veterinarians and clinic/shelter professionals.
- Arranging for full-service care at a veterinary hospital for severely injured, sick, or diseased animals.
- Performing and/or directing necessary euthanasia according to established protocol.
- Establishing and maintaining medical records and drug use logs.
- Ensuring compliance with all State and Federal laws, regulations, and SAWA policies and procedures.
- Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of shelter animal health protocols and companion animal health issues.
- Building and maintaining effective relationships with the community, volunteers, and fellow employees.
- Assisting in the monitoring of inventory and ordering of medical supplies and pharmaceuticals.
Employment Standards:
Knowledge of symptoms of animal diseases; medications associated with veterinary care; State and Federal laws regulations; proper methods of safely handling and restraining animals; animal nutritional needs; proper usage of veterinary and surgical equipment; animal behavior and anatomy; and animal physical examinations.
Ability to detect symptoms of injury, illness, or abnormality in animals; perform medical and surgical procedures; write reports and maintain records; communicate effectively; and work with and restrain animals of all sizes.
Education/Training: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Doctor of Veterinary degree and one year of professional veterinary medical experience.
Special Conditions & Requirements: The physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds; stoop, bend, carry, and run.
License & Certificates: A valid License to practice Veterinary medicine in the State of California and a valid Drug Enforcement Agency Registration Number within six months of appointment. A valid California Class "C" Driver's License or equivalent may be required at time of appointment.
