Responsibilities
Prepares routine and STAT microscopic slides from all tissue removed during surgery procedures that will be interpreted by the Pathologists in the diagnosis of disease. Responsible for organizing work load as assigned. Displays professional, safe conduct in all interactions. Maintains positive working relationships with staff, other departments, physicians, and peers. Displays conduct in support of CHI St. Luke’s Health Mission & Vision.
- Receives, accessions and assists with grossing of tissue specimens from Surgery, doctor’s offices, Endoscopy, outside hospitals, and contract accounts.
- Prepares STAT frozen sections for the Pathologist for immediate diagnosis while the patient is still on the operating table so that the surgeon can determine the extent of the surgical procedure. Completes accessioning, cutting, and staining within a 10-minute time limit on STAT frozen sections.
- Histologically processes tissue, embeds using appropriate orientation depending on type of tissue, sections per protocol, stains, coverslips, reviews for completion, and delivers finished slides to the Pathologist for interpretation.
- Performs multiple special stains necessary to assist in or confirm diagnosis.
- Processes autopsy material and prepares teaching sets.
- Performs preventive maintenance and daily quality assurance on all equipment.
- Adheres to all regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
Education and Certification:
- High School Diploma/GED
- Certification as a Histologist (HT ASCP or HTL ASCP)
Experience:
- Experience in large volume hospital based Histology Lab.
- Experience in operating all histology related equipment.
