Job Description
General Summary
Under general supervision, perform routine and specialized diagnostic and therapeutic angiography procedures on patients following established parameters/protocols for use by physicians in diagnosis and treatment of pathologies. Assist in maintaining a smooth operational flow and maximum patient volume.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
- Clinical Practice/Patient Care - Operates technical angiography equipment and applies ionizing radiation to the patient in accordance with standard operating procedures.
- Greets and receives patient. Checks patient’s ID. Explains procedure to patient.
- Positions patient according to department’s procedure manual. Moves and/or assists patient onto table in accordance with departmental procedures.
- Performs angiography and digital subtraction angiography procedures, utilizing nursing procedures, sterile technique and radiographic technique.
- Operates laser imagers, and PACs equipment to obtain radiographic images. Critiques radiographs for quality and accuracy. Selects and sends images to PACS.
- Provides radiation protection in accordance with regulations.
- Reviews history and pertinent films with designated Radiologist.
- Assists physicians with specialized diagnostic and interventional procedures.
- Responds effectively to patient care emergencies.
- Utilizes universal precautions at all times when working with patients.
- Monitors patient condition throughout the procedure.
- Prepares medications for administration by Radiologist.
- Assists Radiologist with administration of radiopaque materials.
- Cleans and disinfects angiography equipment and scanner room.
- Records and accumulates patient statistics in daily logbooks.
- Responds to "Stat" calls for angiography procedures.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients.
- Demonstrates basic competencies in processing images and troubleshooting.
Unit Management
- Maintains supplies and inventory in area.
- Reviews requests daily for Interventional procedures.
- Reports all potential or actual patient/equipment problems.
- Documents and reports related equipment problems.
- Communicates effectively with patients, nurses, and physicians.
- Acts as a role model for RAD 1.
- Handles telephone inquiries regarding physician and/or patient information.
Leadership
- Participates in 1 area-wide committee.
- Assumes responsibility for one IR project.
Professional Development
- Attends in-service training programs and other relevant training sessions.
- Has Advanced Certification in Cardiovascular Interventional Technology or Vascular Intervention.
Qualifications
- Graduation from an AMA approved school of Radiologic Technology. Registered or Registry-eligible by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Licensed by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene as a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist.
- General knowledge of radiology principles and practices including anatomy and physiology, radiation protection and physics.
- Ability to operate radiology equipment.
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served.
- Ability to use computer systems to manage patient information.
- Ability to lift X-ray cassettes and patients of up to 100 lbs.
- Ability to work with patients possessing potentially infectious disease.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
