Job Summary: The Principle Clinical Application Analyst position will support the Department of Surgery in the University of Utah School of Medicine under the direction of the Medical Group Analytics team. This role will enable the department to translate clinical and operational requirements into actionable analytic solutions. The ideal candidate will have a broad working knowledge of clinical workflows and expert knowledge of Epic EMR capabilities to advance analytics and structured data capture.
Responsibilities:
Key Performance Expectations:
- Effective Intake Documentation:
- Leverages Six Sigma (or similar process improvement methodology) to identify and define problem statement.
- Conduct thorough intake meetings to refine project scope and gather necessary requirements.
- Use resources to find existing examples of requested deliverables/metrics (Epic User Web, Analytics Catalog).
- Ensure clear understanding of deliverables among team members and the customer.
- Perform Workflow Assessments:
- Capture business needs and analyze internal systems to determine functional requirements for optimal utilization of Epic applications.
- Lead discussions and initiatives with in-depth clinical and application knowledge and experience.
- IT Data Consultant:
- Leads project teams with a Department of Surgery first (DOS) approach to gain data insights. Part of a physician/administrative/data analytics triad.
- Provide recommendations based on data trends in the resources created to share with leadership.
- Complete bi-annual audits of newly created resources for optimization and alignment to system best practices and updated applications.
Core Competencies:
- Understand how the design and adoption of an EHR workflow impacts data validity design/use a study design.
- Strong communication skills – Utilize written and verbal communication skills to effectively:
- Translate clinical requests into technical requirements within team presentations.
- Create project briefs to provider forums and C-level audiences.

Minimum Qualifications:
Requires a bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) and 8 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Cogito and Caboodle Data Model Epic Certifications must be obtained within 6 months of hire. Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
Preferences:
Clinical experience with patients (RN, APC, PT, etc.) or direct experience in clinical operations preferred. Epic Care and/or Epic OpTime certifications. Epic SlicerDicer and Cogito report writing experience. Familiar with a variety of the field’s concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of complicated tasks. Leads and directs the work of others. Typically reports to a head of a unit/department.
