This position oversees and manages all nursing functions in the Med-Surg, Critical Care Unit, Telemetry Care System Department, and Dialysis. Employees perform administrative and supervisory work in managing staff functions and evaluate the effectiveness of the care provided to patients on the unit. This position possesses authority for the development and implementation of nursing standards of care, policies, and nursing procedures in the Critical Care Unit, Telemetry, Med-Surg Care System, and Dialysis. The employee has responsibility on a twenty-four (24) hour basis for planning and scheduling of appropriate staff for the department. This position performs duties in accordance with established regulations, policies, nursing standards and medical instructions.
Essential Functions:
Quality Management:
- Participates with department leaders and medical staff in developing policies and procedures and patient care standards to meet licensing requirements and current regulatory standards.
- Supervises staff to ensure standards are appropriate to meet the care needs of all age groups served, including providing coaching to staff.
- Implements guidelines of the Relationship and Results Oriented Healthcare Model for delivery of nursing care, utilizing the recommended bundles of best practice. Monitors staff adherence to RROHC Nursing Model.
- Ensures staff includes the patient and family in the plan of care as appropriate. Provides direction to staff in developing patient focused goals, with the patient and family as appropriate.
- Ensures physicians are notified as needed for changes in condition or new reports related to patients.
- Ensures next of kin are notified of changes in patient condition as required by regulations and that notifications are appropriately documented.
- Monitors compliance with policies, procedures, national patient safety goals and standards of care by assigned staff. Provides counsel and discipline on policies, procedures, national patient safety goals and standards of care appropriately in the daily supervision of the Critical Care, Telemetry, Med-Surg Care Units, and Dialysis.
- Maintains a performance improvement monitoring system to measure patient care outcomes and identifies improvement opportunities. Works within the hospital Performance Improvement system, utilizing tools and reporting mechanisms to demonstrate improvement over time.
- Involves staff in the performance improvement processes for the department; i.e., problem identification, data collection, data assessment and follow-up processes for measuring improvement over time.
- Provides leadership for assessing processes, policies and procedures which direct care and challenges staff to make modifications, and improvements in the delivery of patient care.
- Develops and implements Critical Care programs/protocols which are in compliance with national professional guidelines (e.g., AACN) and community standards.
Financial Management:
- Manages department within the FTE and cost standards assigned and within the annual budget, in addition to identifying cost saving measures and opportunities.
- Communicates the staffing plan necessary to meet care needs in the CCU, Telemetry, Med-Surg units, and Dialysis ensuring the appropriate number and skill level of staff are utilized effectively and efficiently.
- Identifies equipment needs, supplies, linen, and other resources required for patient care. Communicates with other leaders in planning for effectively utilizing these resources. Manages equipment use in a safe and effective manner, preventing unnecessary repairs and replacement.
Managing Human Resources:
- Provides orientation and education of staff to ensure performance of responsibilities is carried out within a culture of safety through compliance with National Patient Safety Goals and infection control practices, policies and procedures.
- Maintains current job descriptions for all positions within the department.
- Collaborates with Human Resources policies and procedures in managing department staff.
- Interviews applicants for position vacancies and makes hiring recommendations to the AVP of Nursing.
- Completes payroll documentation and approves timecards in Kronos.
- Ensures staff is organized and oriented to work as a team with other care providers; utilizing good communication skills, critical thinking, and checkpoints for teamwork.
- Assesses the competence and skill of staff to meet the requirements of the respective job description.
- Monitors employee performance and provides performance appraisals on all department staff, identifying strengths and areas for performance improvement. Implements plans for improvement as appropriate.
- Counsels staff with appropriate documentation as needed to recognize and reward good performance and to identify and monitor areas needing improvement.
- Identifies educational needs of staff and works with available staff and resources both internally and externally to meet the learning needs of staff.
- Maintains an effective method of keeping staff informed of current hospital events, collaborative policies and procedures within the hospital as well as the department, keeping a channel of communications with staff consistently open.
- Maintains patient relations through interdepartmental communications and team building.
Managing Department Service:
- Oversees and manages all nursing functions for the Critical Care, Telemetry, Med-Surg, Dialysis Care Units.
- Serves as a resource to the nursing staff in clinical and managerial decision-making.
- Makes daily rounds of the unit and follows up on any problems identified with the patients, facility or equipment.
- Reviews charts of new admissions or patients with unusual occurrences.
- Participates in the care planning for patients on unit.
- Assists with managing, documenting and investigating incidents and accidents to determine contributing factors and details regarding the incident. Ensures that notifications are complete and appropriate documentation and interventions are in place.
- Prepares written and oral reports for the Director of Nursing.
- Assists and participates in activities related to the inspection/investigation of the hospital by regulatory or accrediting agencies.
- Evaluates the Critical Care, Telemetry, Med-Surg, and Dialysis Department functions continually to determine opportunities for expanding services or reducing services not utilized.
- Daily huddles.
- Staff meetings according to the department needs.
- Actively seeks opportunities for improving the service of staff and of the department; making recommendations to the Director of Nursing accordingly.
Growth:
- Implements new technology and procedures to promote efficiency, safety, and effectiveness of care.
- Participates in budget planning and strategic planning with emphasis on the potential for the department to grow in volume, services, quality, and/or programs.
- Identifies services that are not effectively utilized and determines appropriate interventions for improvement.
- Maintains professional growth with continuing education, by providing in-service, coaching and mentoring of staff for continuing the professional growth of the department.
- Supports and demonstrates practices consistent with the hospital’s mission, philosophy, standards, policies and procedures.
- Adheres to professional nursing codes of ethics.
- Emergency duty may be required of the incumbent that includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters or to perform other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to threats or disasters, man-made or natural.
