ABOUT THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY:The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation. DHS operates as an integrated health system, operating 25 health centers and four acute care hospitals, in addition to providing health care to youth in the juvenile justice system and inmates in the LA County jails. Across the network of DHS' directly operated clinical sites and through partnerships with community-based clinics, DHS cares for about 600,000 unique patients each year, employs over 23,000 staff, and has an annual operating budget of 6.9 billion.

In addition, to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings, to supportive housing.

DEFINITION:Performs comprehensive physical therapy case management, consultative or liaison services for a large group of acute or rehabilitative, hospital or clinic patients, or children with severe physical and mental disabilities.
- Manages a caseload of patients with varied diagnoses and complexity levels, providing interventions, treatments, and services for acute medical, rehabilitative hospital, clinic, or California Children's Services programs.
- Arranges, schedules, and conducts clinics, evaluates and prioritizes patients for treatment and provides follow-up care.
- Supervises a small staff of physical therapy assistants or therapy technicians and student physical therapists.
- Assigns and demonstrates elements of patients' treatment programs, reviews their work and prepares and discusses their performance with them.
- Prepares performance evaluation reports.
- Evaluates referrals from physicians, family members, allied health or school personnel and community agencies.
- Selects patients for eligibility consideration and performs initial evaluation to determine therapy needs.
- Initiates referrals to specialists in hospitals, community or governmental agencies for medical and/or psychiatric evaluations.
- Serves as a member of a clinic health care team in making decisions regarding care for a caseload of clinic patients with widely varied diagnoses or with involved treatment problems who require continuing comprehensive follow-up care.
SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:Graduation from a physical therapy curriculum acceptable to the Commission on Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education of the American Physical Therapy Association and approved by the Physical Therapy Board of California -OR- Successful completion in a physical therapy school or schools of a resident course of professional instruction equivalent to the educational standards approved by the Physical Therapy Board of California -AND- Two years of experience at the level of Physical Therapist I*. A Master's degree from an accredited college/university in physical therapy, public health, special education or other related fields may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
LICENSE:A license to practice as a Physical Therapist issued by the Physical Therapy Board of California -OR- have filed an application for such a license. The license must be presented upon publication of the results of the next examination after the date of filing for the license; all required licenses and certifications must be active and unrestricted.
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
PHYSICAL CLASS III - Moderate:Includes standing or waling most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
Special Requirement Information:In order to receive credit for any college course work, or any type of college degree, such as a Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, or higher in Physical Therapy, license and/or application for licensure, you must include a legible copy of the official diploma, official transcripts, official letter from the accredited institution which shows the area of specialization; or official license or proof of application for licensure with your application within 15 calendar days of filing.

The required license MUST be current and unrestricted; a conditional, provisional, probationary or restricted license will NOT be accepted.*In Los Angeles County, Physical Therapist I provides professional physical therapy services to assist patients with physical or mental disabilities to attain, regain, or maintain physical functions or to adjust to their disabilities.
Special Information:Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Examination Content:This examination will consist of an evaluation of education and experience, based on application information weighted at 100%.
Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.

Eligibility Information:Applications will be processed on an
"as-received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.
The names of candidates receiving a passing score on the examination will be added to the eligible register and will appear in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of eligibility.
No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.
