The Lab Technician role is responsible for assignments related to the day-to-day performance of the material testing laboratory (including mortar, concrete, and aggregate testing) in a manner that results in high-quality products according to established standard tests required for research, development, quality control, and/or technical service.
Essential Functions
- Prepares/processes materials samples including:
- Active involvement in standard and exploratory experiment design.
- Routine laboratory activity to make or prep materials, test samples, run lab trials per ASTM Standards.
- Development work with non-routine R&D assignments such as design of fixtures for experimental set-up and establishing proper data acquisition. (50%) - Collects and reports scientific & engineering data obtained from laboratory equipment through an effective plan/coordination and maintains laboratory notebook. (20%)
- Maintain laboratories and equipment including set-up, general maintenance, operation, and troubleshooting of experimental equipment or instruments. (20%)
- Other duties within the department as assigned. (10%)

- High School Diploma or GED (demonstrated equivalent) - Required
- Technical related field of study/interest - Required
- Associates or Bachelors degree in an engineering, technical, or science related field (or demonstrated equivalent) - Preferred
- Including technical related independent project - Preferred
Work Experience
- Lab Work and chemical handling – routine laboratory activity to make or prep materials and test samples (2+ years) - Required
- Mechanical aptitude and construction experience (2+ years) - Preferred
Description
- Capability to use personal computer and Microsoft Office applications, such as Excel and Word - Required
- Troubleshooting skills – to aid in fixing equipment and improving processes - Required
- Maintenance of lab equipment including lab-scale furnaces, saws, drills, and coordinate required maintenance from outside sources if necessary - Preferred
- Basic knowledge of HSE and 5S for maintaining chemical inventories, safety programs - Preferred
- The individual would also be proficient in rudimentary calculations required to prepare adhesive/coating mixtures and solutions, calibration of equipment, and project planning. Experience with polymer materials is preferred. - Preferred
Practical/Technical/Digital Knowledge
- Familiar with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) - Required
- Makes simple mathematical calculations requiring some knowledge of chemical/engineering technology (basic statistical analysis such as average, standard deviation) - Preferred
