GENERAL SUMMARY:
As a Nurse Manager with Florida Hospital Waterman Emergency Services, you will make providing service your priority while caring for the whole person in a faith-based atmosphere. The Nurse Manager is a registered professional who has the most direct impact on the care and services that patients and families require throughout their hospital experience. The Nurse Manager is directly responsible to the Director of Emergency Services and the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO). The Nurse Manager is responsible for the 24/7 continual operations of the Emergency Department. The Nurse Manager is able to demonstrate critical thinking, creativity, and has the knowledge to manage resources to achieve quality performance, positive employee relations, and compliance with hospital guidelines. The Nurse Manager is skilled in coaching, motivating, mentoring, and leading a professional and technical team in the delivery of Emergency Services to our patient population. The Nurse Manager assures quality of care delivery for our patients and demonstrates effective stewardship of resources. The Nurse Manager is the change agent for Emergency Services and is responsible for implementing any changes that the unit is required to undergo in an effective, positive manner. The Nurse Manager actively participates in outstanding customer service, including service to patients, families, physicians, and other contacts while accepting responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Monitors performance of staff and takes corrective action for improvement as appropriate.
- In collaboration with Human Resources, the Nurse Manager uses independent judgement to:
- Select applicants, interview, and hire while monitoring orientation progression.
- Suspend or invoke other discipline for performance and/or behavior deficiencies and conduct violations by exercising supervisory authority.
- Evaluates supervised employees, recommends promotions and awarding of other rewards and/or recognition.
- Terminates supervised employees when appropriate.
- Assigns duties or activities to employees and authorizes overtime where appropriate.
- Resolves complaints, concerns, and problems of supervised employees with the following but not limited to work assignments, scheduling, and other work-related matters.
- Assures diversity of staff is positively fostered in the work environment. Actively involves all groups in shared decision-making where appropriate.
- Uses effective conflict management skills and is able to reach a common goal in resolution.
- Creates a work environment that addresses the physical and emotional needs of staff and one that is conducive to staff retention.
- Demonstrates Financial Management competencies.
- Understands health care economics, public policy, and finance as it pertains to the delivery of patient care.
- Understands the broad impact of reimbursement on the delivery of patient care services, including but not limited to Medicare, Managed Care, challenges to current health care policies, and key legislative initiatives.
- Develops, analyzes, and interprets unit-department based budgeting.
- Maintains staffing and scheduling as well as resource utilization within budgeted targets for the unit.
- Fosters patient, family, and staff satisfaction. Understands the impact of dissatisfaction on the business goals of the unit.
- May be involved in capital budgeting and produce a cost benefit analyses to justify equipment.
- Demonstrates the ability to lead Performance Improvement initiatives on their assigned unit.
- Champions performance improvement activities in the department.
- Identifies problems, assesses, gathers data, implements change, and evaluates outcomes.
- Actively involved in all aspects of patient safety on the unit including but not limited to sentinel event monitoring and reporting, root cause analysis, regulatory agency requirements, incident reporting, medication safety and facility policies.
- Assures workplace safety for employees and demonstrates knowledge of regulatory requirements i.e. CMS, JC, OSHA, etc.
- Supports continual process improvement by sponsoring and/or participating in the activities.
- Ensure that practice changes are implemented as a result of performance improvement activities.
- Sets quality standards for the department through collaboration with Leadership and implementation of evidence-based practice.
- Demonstrates the ability to think critically and utilize technology in relation to the operations of the unit and delivery of patient care.
- Utilizes critical thinking skills and demonstrates an understanding of technology utilized in the organization.
- Employs strong problem-solving skills and has the ability to lead the unit through the application of critical thinking skills.
- Assures resources and talent are available to support staff in the utilization of supply and medication management systems.
- Utilizes data driven decision-making into the decision process.
- Demonstrates leadership and clinical practice knowledge.
- Provides leadership for the effective and efficient operations of the department.
- Assures clinical practice is of the highest quality.
- Leads all employees in a manner which develops the optimal level of performance.
- Mentors Charge Nurses and high performing employees.
- Sets clear expectations in the delivery of clinical practice.
- Ensures that the Patient Experience is the focus of all employees as well as creating Trust, Belonging, and Hope for the patient population.
- Assists the staff with serving patients meaningfully and purposefully while delivering patient-focused care.
- Maintains a customer-oriented leadership style while remembering patients are the true reason for our business.
- Holds self and staff accountable for delivery of care and patient outcomes.
- Establishes and maintains a communication plan that disseminates key messages.
- Is accessible within the department in a manner that allows for effective operational involvement.

- Maintains appropriate collaborative relationships with direct reports, patients, families, other disciplines, and contacts.
- In accordance with FHW policy, works collaboratively to define acceptable behaviors from staff and adheres to those acceptable behaviors.
- Acts as a positive role model for professional behavior, attitude and professional appearance.
- Maintains the confidentiality of employees, patients, administration, and medical staff information with no infractions.
- Involved in at least one professional organization and encourages others to become involved.

- Refuses to participate in unethical procedures and assumes the responsibility of informing the appropriate authority of noted incompetence or unethical behavior.
- Accepts responsibility for knowing current changes in policy, protocols, and procedures through hospital communication systems.
- Meets educational requirements of position and maintains own competency levels in relation to departmental position.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:
- Current, valid Florida State of Nursing license as a registered professional nurse.
- Certification from a national organization within two years of hire i.e. CEN.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION PREFERRED:
- Certification in Emergency Nursing (CEN).
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Leadership role with direct reports and 24/7 responsibility.
