Under the general supervision of the Surgical Skills Center Coordinator, this position is for the coordination of the Center curriculum including development of new curricular modules, delivery of the curriculum and evaluation along with surgical faculty.
Examples of Duties
Operations/Service
- Coordinates day to day activities and services of the skills center.
- Assists in scheduling resident curriculum activities.
- Assists the Center Coordinator in coordinating faculty instructors for curriculum modules.
- Assists in ad hoc usage of the center by surgical residents and students.
- Assists faculty and Center Coordinator with the development of new basic skills models and modules.
- Organization, setup and clean up of all instrumentation and models for educational activities in the center.
- Care and maintenance of all equipment and instruments in the facility and report all equipment damage and needed instrument repairs.
- Organizes and orders equipment and supplies for all activities in the center.
- Organize and maintains Wet and Dry lab space, storage space, decontamination space and tissue preparation area.
- Provides assistance to instructors and all participants in the center setting.
- Assists with development and creating of anatomical models for simulation and skills practice.
- Serves as a liaison with divisional faculty, company representatives, industry partners, and anatomical pathology staff to maintain a continuous and positive relationship.
- Develops and maintains a library of reference materials on surgical skills.
- Assists the Center Coordinator in liaison with Public Affairs in scheduling tours, visits, and other public relations activities.
- Assists with educational research activities in the Center.
- Assists the Coordinator with organizing and collecting ongoing evaluation of the curriculum modules and prepares an annual evaluation summary.
- Assist the Center Coordinator and the Program Director's group in identification of new areas for development of innovative curriculum modules and models.
- Assists the Center Coordinator with the orientation of new employees.
- Assist the Coordinator and Office Manager in the grant request process.
Teaching
- Supervises, provides feedback, and evaluates residents participating in curriculum modules and proficiency modules.
- Assists the Coordinator in the planning and delivery of faculty development activities.
- In conjunction with faculty provides teaching for special skills center activities for nurses, medical students, and area students on career days.
Service
- Assists with the preparation and presentation of papers at local, state, and national meetings.
- Serves on Surgical Skills Center, departmental, and institutional committees as needed.
- Provides consultation to visiting groups and individuals seeking to develop new surgical programs.
Clinical
- Work in the Operating room to stay current in surgical procedures, techniques and equipment. Observe residents in OR environment.
Qualifications
1) Five years as a Certified Surgical Technician or equivalent.
2) Excellent organizational and technical skills
3) Excellent communication skills
4) Excellent interpersonal skills
5) Proficiency in computer skills
6) Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations
