Neonatal Physician Assistant (PHYSCN AST)Job SummaryPAs are expected to act as an expert resource for health care providers including nurses, residents, and other ancillary staff. Patient management decisions are independent where appropriate. The PA may perform non-invasive, invasive, and surgical procedures, including first assist per approved standardized procedures. Demonstrates leadership skills and accountability for own practice as defined by the California Physician Assistant board.
Provides direct patient care to a diversified complex patient population. Applies knowledge, experience, and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, sets priorities, and uses abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations. Participates in patient and staff education.

- Graduation with a master's degree, or PhD from an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
- California Licensed Physician Assistant (PA)
- Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Certificate within 3 months of hire
- National PA board certification in an aligned specialty with the practice area (NCCPA)
- American Heart Association (AHA) BLS CPR certification
- American Heart Association (AHA) NRP certification
- Ability to cope with personal stress experienced by team members, other professionals, and caretakers
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Judgment skills to effectively meet the needs of patients
- Self-direction and organizational skills to function in an independent role
- Ability to meet minimum standards for hospital credentialing and billing standards as a billable provider
Preferred Qualifications- Five years or greater recent clinical experience in a Level III or Level IV NICU highly desirable
- Experience in providing care to extremely low birth weight neonates highly desirable.
Department DescriptionUnder the direction of the Neonatology Attending Physicians, the Neonatal Physician Assistant cares for neonatal patients with congenital anomalies, birth asphyxia, respiratory distress, preterm delivery, meconium aspiration, pulmonary hypertension, and any other conditions that require admission to the NICU. The role of the Neonatal PA is to facilitate multi-disciplinary care through interaction with patients, families, housestaff, attendings, and nurses. Patient care provided includes but is not limited to initiating appropriate consultations and referrals, accurate patient evaluation and care, follow-up evaluations, and patient care planning, care education, and coordination of care.
