The Broad Institute of MIT & Harvard seeks a highly skilled and experienced Scientific Advisor, who will provide advisory support to the Founding Director of the Broad Institute, Dr. Eric Lander, including in his role as chair of the Broad’s Scientific Leadership Team (SLT). The SLT is charged with creating, distilling, and developing the vision for the next generation of Broad’s science.
The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in scientific writing and editorial experience, exceptional research and writing skills, a deep understanding of biology and related scientific disciplines, and the ability to distill complex scientific concepts into clear and engaging content.
Key Responsibilities:
This role has two key responsibilities:
Support the work of the Broad’s Scientific Leadership Team. This will entail working closely with Dr. Lander (as well as Dr. Feng Zhang, vice-chair of the SLT, and other members of the SLT) to capture and distill discussions; conduct research on a broad range of topics; draft reports and white papers; and set agendas and manage working groups.
Undertake research on scientific topics for Dr. Lander to support both his institutional work and his teaching. This will range from rapidly producing short briefings on particular topics to larger-scale research projects. (The use of state-of-the-art AI research tools is highly encouraged in this role.)
In addition, the incumbent will support Dr. Lander, his lab, and his scientific collaborators to produce and edit scientific papers and work with the Office of Sponsored Research to write and edit grant proposals in support of priority projects.
Qualifications:
Minimum of 2 years of experience in science writing and editing, such as a science writer, scientific journal editor, or journalist.
Exceptional writing skills with the ability to convey complex scientific concepts in a clear and engaging manner.
Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy and precision in writing and editing.
Proficiency in scientific research methods, literature review, and data analysis.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders.
Capable of coordinating concurrent work by numerous contributors for complex products to on-deadline delivery.
Strong interviewing skills to gather and distill information from a range of sources.
Able to effectively work with researchers at various levels and from a variety of scientific backgrounds
Familiarity with scientific publishing standards, ethics, and guidelines.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
Experience with AI tools for research is desirable.
