Job Title: Chemist (NWS 00731)
THIS POSITION IS SHORT TERM, MAX 1000 HOURS PER CALENDAR YEAR
North Wind Services is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. NWS has an established history of contributing to the success of their customer's mission. Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.
The Strategic Deterrence Directorate has an opening for an experienced Chemist to develop expertise in the analysis and interpretation of radiochemical data for stockpile stewardship while mentoring the next generation of radiochemists. The successful candidate will report to the Nuclear Test Data Program Group Leader to mentor early career radiochemists in the area of radiochemical assessments. With minimal supervision, the successful candidate will improve upon the radiochemical assessment tools and techniques. The successful candidate will dive deep into technical data and interpret this data into information on a detailed report.
This position may require the employee to have the flexibility to work overtime, shift and/or weekends to accomplish goals. The successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.
Essential Duties
- Conduct analysis and interpret radiochemical data to enhance our understanding of nuclear test history.
- Technically assist with providing context to archiving historical documentation through digitization as well as context to historical methodologies within radiochemistry.
- Mentor early career radiochemists in the area of radiochemical assessments and interpretation of nuclear test data and knowledge transfers.
- Modernize tools used to generate and interpret nuclear test data.
- Interact with data archiving personnel to provide valuable information and context.
- Attend biweekly meetings with radiochemists discussing challenging topics within radiochemistry.
- Improve upon radiochemical assessment tools and techniques involving early career staff.
- Work daily towards modernization of toolsets for assessment work.
- Meet weekly with one or two radiochemists to discuss technical aspects of an assessment.
- Engage with early career scientists towards knowledge transfer of radiochemical methods.
- Perform other job duties as assigned.
Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Ph.D. in Chemistry or equivalent area of science such as Radiochemistry, Geochemistry, Physics, or Biology.
- 15+ years of experience in technical leadership, program planning, and digitization of radiochemical data.
- Expert level experience in analysis and interpretation of radiochemical data from nuclear test history.
- Strong understanding of the US Weapon testing history and nuclear and radiochemistry techniques.
- Effective communication skills to engage in a team environment and meet project deliverables.
- Motivate teams to achieve complex technical objectives.
- Experience working with Microsoft Suite, including but not limited to Word and Excel, specifically understanding macros within Excel.
- Experience processing data files from a variety of text-based outputs from historical data packages.
- Experience with supporting and mentoring early career staff in the radiochemical assessment area while continuing to support the development of modernized tools used in analysis.
Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Experience in developing novel techniques and capabilities to advance stockpile stewardship missions and national security missions.
- Leading groups of scientists to obtain mission goals and deliverables.

Anticipated Clearance Level: Q
(position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.
