Job Purpose:
The Alvin C. York VAMC is seeking two (2) onsite Full Time Medical Technologists/Medical Technicians to provide Clinical Laboratory generalist duties in supporting the healthcare services to the Veterans who receive healthcare treatment at these facilities. At least one (1) year of experience working as a Medical Technologist/Medical Technician at an acute care facility is required. Experience at the Department of Veterans Affairs will be an asset.
Hours for Service/Shifts:
Staffing and shift requirements: Seven days a week to include weekends and Federal Holidays. Shift will be based upon needs of the service or when there are acute staffing needs, with a two-week notice to change scheduled tour.

Day shift- 8:00 am to 4:30 pm to include weekends and Holidays
Location:
Alvin C. York VA Medical Center, located at 3400 Lebanon Rd, Murfreesboro, TN 37129
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide patient testing and preservation of specimens for later analysis.
- Perform stat and routine testing in the laboratory at both the Nashville and Murfreesboro campuses in the areas of hematology, chemistry, coagulation, urinalysis, basic microbiology and blood bank.
- Send out testing required on a STAT basis.
- Perform steps of analysis for a full range of standard, routine and specialized tests including instrument maintenance and performance checks, preparation of reagents/media, calibration/calibration verification of assays, and quality control testing.
- Follow all Clinical Laboratory protocols and procedures in accordance with local, accrediting agency, and regulatory authority standards.
- Participate in routine Proficiency Testing on a rotating basis.
- Perform required testing in blood bank and issue blood and blood products as requested and ordered by physicians.
- Request blood and blood products from the American Red Cross should the need arise under applicable TVHS purchase order.
- Must be able to use the computer system and enter patient results in the computer system.
- Meet all Tennessee Valley Healthcare requirements to include the Privacy Act, HIPAA and Patient Safety rules, and all confidentiality rights of patients.
Degree Requirements, Skills & Qualifications:
Medical Technologist:
- Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory or a related science.
- American Medical Technologist or American Society for Clinical Pathology Certification.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate.
- 1 year of experience in an acute care facility.
- Independent Judgment and responsibility.
- Confidence in Technical skills.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English language.
Medical Technician:
- Associate degree in medical laboratory or a related science.
- American Medical Technologist or American Society for Clinical Pathology Certification.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate.
- 1 year of experience in an acute care facility.
- Independent Judgment and responsibility.
- Confidence in Technical skills.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English language.
Additional Qualifying Information:
- All procedures are to be done in accordance with the terms and conditions set forth for beneficiaries of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
- All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.

- Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
