Job Summary
Responsible for the efficient operation of a moderate or high complexity laboratory facility in an outpatient office or satellite hospital. Ensures accurate and timely testing procedures. Assures compliance with applicable regulations regarding laboratory operations. Participates in site-specific daily operations, communications, and patient flow.
Essential Functions

- Supervises laboratory personnel. Evaluates qualifications of potential employees; interviews and hires; monitors and evaluates performance. Trains or assigns training of lab personnel and coordinates or oversees competency. Provides for continuing education program and monitors employee participation. Schedules laboratory personnel. Directly supervises day-to-day testing and reporting.
- Acts as working general supervisor for the laboratory. Performs routine tests as required and develops knowledge of more complex tests to perform as needed. Performs competency assessment for moderate or high complexity testing as assigned.
- Establishes and monitors quality assurance, quality control, proficiency testing, and routine maintenance policies and procedures. Reviews patient test results, quality control, proficiency testing, and maintenance records. Ensures that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning.
- Establishes and monitors policies and procedures for overall testing performance. Selects, evaluates, and validates test methods. Writes new test procedures and maintains a current procedure manual.
- Communicates effectively in person, by phone, and in writing. Maintains open communication with laboratory leaders, pathologists, and fellow team members. Communicates pertinent information to other members of the healthcare team. Uses positive and professional interpersonal skills to educate/support laboratory customers.
- Orders supplies and equipment. Evaluates new equipment and reagents for technical performance and cost-effectiveness. Maintains a safe and clean working environment and responds immediately to safety violations.
- Complies with Policies and Procedures of Prisma Health system, campus, and laboratory. Understands and complies with standards and conditions set forth by various governmental and accrediting agencies in assigned operational area. Attends meetings as required and participates on committees as directed.
- Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education; accesses training needs and participates in Continuing Education (CE) programs annually. Completes all required 6 month and annual competencies in required time frame and performs proficiency testing as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory/Management Responsibilities
- Job has direct and/or indirect supervision of team members that may include final budget authority, hire/termination authority, performance appraisal responsibility, and disciplinary authority. Job will be considered a member of management staff at Prisma Health Company or affiliate and will have direct reports.
Minimum Requirements
- Education - Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology. Bachelor's degree in Chemical/Physical/Biological/Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology from an accredited institution preferred or one that meets ASCP or AMT certification.
- Experience - Four (4) years clinical laboratory experience.
Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses
- Certification must be current for one of the following: MLS(ASCP)cm, MT(ASCP), Categorical (ASCP), Categorical (ASCP)cm MT(AMT), MLT (ASCP), MLT(ASCP)cm.
