Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist III (Virology) for NJMS- Emerging Pathogens. The Research Teaching Specialist III is responsible for daily oversight of development and testing new assays safely in the BSL3/ABSL3 environment while adhering to the CDC guidelines, federal, state, and local regulations, and institutional guidelines. Will perform research with BSL2/BSL3 bacteria and viruses and Select Agents in in-vitro and in- vivo models. Will also assist the BSL3 Director and Deputy Lab Manager to oversee the lab duties as assigned.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Collaborates with principal investigators, research teams, and faculty on ongoing research projects involving bacterial and viral research.
- Cultures and quantitates pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria and viruses including SARS-COV-2, M.Tuberculosis requiring work in the BSL3/ABSL3 facilities including Tier 1 agents.
- Performs detailed MICs and DNA/RNA extraction of above-described pathogens using various systems and performs preliminary analysis.
- Assists in the development and testing of new assays.
- Assist in preparing IACUC approvals, renewals and submissions.
- Assists design of animal studies for IBC, IACUC, and for grant submission.
- Works with animal models for MTb, SARS-CoV2, Chikungunya virus, yellow fever virus.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- Requires Masters in Science (preferably biology) plus one (1) year of related research experience,
- OR a Bachelor's Degree in Science and at least two (2) years of work experience in containment laboratory management and one (1) year of work experience with animal infection models under Biosafety level 3 containment.

- Experience in infectious diseases.
- Hand on experience with BSL3 pathogens.
- Must be computer literate with proficiency and working of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience or knowledge regarding biological safety including pathogenic microorganisms (eg infectious dose, natural reservoirs, route of transmission, communicability, environmental stability, antibiotic sensitivities/resistance, and sensitivities to disinfectants) in biosafety/laboratory safety practices preferred.
- Working knowledge of NIH and CDC guidelines preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Lifting up to 25lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Animal Bio-Safety Level 3 and Biosafety level 3 Laboratories.
