PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects, and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.
- Demonstrate professional customer service skills whenever interacting with customers.
- Perform receptionist and clerical duties:
- Greets patients arriving in the phlebotomy laboratory.
- Answer phone in an appropriate manner.
- Logs into computer, accesses EPIC and Sunquest.
- Print and fax results as needed, making certain HIPAA protocols are followed.
- Perform necessary paperwork and clerical tasks.
- Perform phlebotomy and other responsibilities related to phlebotomy:
- Perform routine and difficult venipuncture on infants, children, young adults, adults, and geriatric populations using aseptic and proper technique.
- Perform heel-sticks and finger-sticks as needed.
- Collect blood cultures using aseptic techniques.
- Prepare the blood drawing area for patients, ensuring an appropriate inventory of supplies is maintained and that the area is kept clean and orderly.
- Log, use, and maintain Sunquest collection manager devices.
- Generate and affix barcode labels to specimens after collection in the presence of the patient.
- Log into the computer all tests checked off on the requisition, ensuring all pertinent information and comments are included in the process.
- Create HOV and release test orders using the EPIC Hyperspace system.
- Produce barcode labels to affix to specimens after collection.
- Ensure that specimens are appropriately labeled and collected.
- Maintain correct paperwork and procedures.
- Process specimens for testing:
- Access specimens, manually log-in procedures, ensuring all pertinent information is included in the process, prioritizing “stat” and other priority samples.
- Label specimens as necessary and properly forward them for testing, ensuring the number and color of tubes is correct.
- Process specimens by centrifugation, ensuring specimens are spun in order of their priority and knowing the correct centrifugation speed/mode.
- Aliquot samples as needed, ensuring that amounts and types of specimens are aliquoted correctly, maintaining sample integrity per established procedures, and placing samples in the appropriate locations for pick-up by partner’s courier.
- Maintain a safe work area and adhere to all safety, infection control, and OSHA guidelines and policies.
- Demonstrate professional customer service skills whenever interacting with customers.
- Perform support services as assigned and other duties as required.
- Be responsible for all other responsibilities and duties necessary for the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, including safety and compliance with OSHA.
- Be aware of The Joint National Patient Safety Goals and comply with BWH Hospital and Laboratory policies and procedures.
- Rotate to all ambulatory labs, including offsite locations and inpatient phlebotomy when needed.
