This position provides day-to-day direct support, management, and oversight for the mass spectrometry operations in the Arizona Laboratory for Emerging Contaminants (ALEC). ALEC is a core analytical facility in the Department of Environmental Science that provides analytical chemistry capacity to university faculty, staff, and students. The primary function of this position involves methods development and sample analysis using separation and mass spectrometry techniques for the quantification of trace inorganic and organic chemicals in complex environmental samples including water, soil, sediment, biofluids, and tissue.
As this is a laboratory manager position, employment is on site and requires presence in the laboratory during normal business hours.

Duties & Responsibilities:
- Conduct hands-on preparatory work and lead mass spectrometry analysis in ALEC, including developing methods and analyzing samples for both external and internal clients.
- Manage the purchase, setup, and maintenance of laboratory equipment, consumables, and solution preparation.
- Apply advanced techniques such as inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), and gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS).
- Manage effective laboratory maintenance and operational efficiency, including sample analysis, billing, client communications, rate studies, consumables and facility management, integrated technology, data management, and the laboratory website.
- Lead hosting of visitors and manage laboratory scheduling to optimize resource allocation.
- Mentor and guide ALEC staff, as well as undergraduate, graduate students, and postdoctoral scientists, fostering professional development and ensuring proper utilization of ALEC equipment.
Minimum Qualifications:
- M.S. degree in Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science or a related field, with a strong background in analytical chemistry, particularly mass spectrometry methods and 1 year of relevant work; OR,
- B.S. degree plus three years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience in laboratory management, quality assurance and quality control, and supervisory responsibilities.
