Job Description
Phlebotomist/Laboratory Technician II greets patients, processes paperwork and specimens, and logs all tests into the computer. Performs heelsticks, fingersticks, and venipunctures on all patients to include:
- Infant (age 0-2)
- Children (age 2-14)
- Adolescents (age 14-20)
- Adult (age 20-65)
- Older Adults (>65 years)
Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate professional customer service skills whenever interacting with customers.
- Perform receptionist and clerical duties.
- Greet patients arriving in the phlebotomy laboratory.
- Answer phone in an appropriate manner.
- Log into computer, access EPIC and Sunquest.
- Print and fax results as needed, making certain HIPAA protocols are followed.
- Perform other duties, necessary paperwork, and clerical tasks.
- Perform phlebotomy and other responsibilities related to phlebotomy.
- Perform routine and difficult venipuncture on various age groups using aseptic and proper technique.
- Perform heel-sticks and finger-sticks as needed.
- Collect blood cultures using aseptic techniques.
- Prepare the blood drawing area for patients, ensuring an appropriate inventory of supplies is maintained and that the area is clean and orderly.
- Log, use, and maintain Sunquest collection manager devices.
- Generate and affix barcode labels to specimens after collection in the presence of the patient.
- Log into the computer, checking off all tests on the requisition, ensuring all pertinent information and comments are included.
- Create HOV and release test orders using the EPIC Hyperspace system.
- Produce bar code labels to affix to specimens after collection.
- Ensure specimens are appropriately labeled and collected.
- Maintain correct paperwork and procedures.
- Process specimens for testing, including accessioning specimens and ensuring priority samples are processed first.
- Label specimens as necessary and forward them for testing.
- Process specimens by centrifugation, ensuring they are spun in order of priority and at the correct speed/mode.
- Aliquot samples as needed, maintaining sample integrity per established procedures.
- Maintain a safe work area and adhere to all safety, infection control, and OSHA guidelines and policies.
- Perform support services as assigned and other duties as required.
- Be aware of The Joint National Patient Safety Goals and comply with BWH Hospital and Laboratory policies and procedures.
- Rotate to all ambulatory labs, including offsite locations and inpatient phlebotomy when needed.
Qualifications
- High School diploma required.
- Phlebotomy certification preferred (ASCP, ASPT).
- Phlebotomy certificate preferred (graduate of a phlebotomy training program or schooling).
- Two years experience as a phlebotomist.
