Responsibilities
In collaboration with the psychiatrist, provides direction for the management of patients with medical conditions. Responsible for providing medical consultations and comprehensive, direct services to patients and their families including assessment of physical symptoms and pharmacological interventions.
Care for adolescents and young adults up to age 35 years old.
- Responsible for conducting admission history and physical examinations for psychiatrically hospitalized youth and young adults within 24 hours of admission.
- Makes appropriate medical referrals outside the organization when indicated.
- Collaborates with physicians and RNs to review cases, provide treatment, and offer input regarding capability of providing care to patients with medically complex presentations.
- Oriented and educated in gender, cultural differences, and age-appropriate care for the assigned population.
- Provides education to staff and patients/families.
- Work schedule structured as alternating 7 days on/7 days off, with two Primary Care Consultants working each 7 days. While providing flexibility regarding hours, generally anticipate physical presence in the hospital during normal business hours Monday through Friday, and ready availability by phone should one need to be off the hospital campus. Availability until 8:00PM to provide occasional consultation by phone to hospital staff, with schedule to be determined with the Primary Care Providers paired together for a 7-day shift.
Qualifications
- This position requires medical knowledge possessed by individuals trained as a nurse practitioner or a certified physician assistant. Current Minnesota RN license and NP certification or registration by the MN Board of Medical Practice and PA certification by the NCCPA are required. Education regarding and/or significant experience working with pediatric and adult populations.
- Experience with psychiatric illness in adults and youth preferred.
- Required to be knowledgeable of and follow the requisite state statutes regulating his/her practice and to display a positive attitude in all aspects of his/her clinical performance.
- Must have ability to effectively work as a part of a treatment team.
- Computer experience using Microsoft Office Products including Outlook and Word required.
- Must have ability to clearly summarize pertinent clinical information via written correspondence and medical records documentation.
- Must have strong skills in clinical case management, time management, and written and verbal communication.
- Ability to maintain information as highly confidential.
- Ability to treat all age populations consistent with licensure or have the capacity to develop these skills.
- Must have ability to manage a variety of clinical obligations in a timely manner.
