Position Summary
At Stony Brook Medicine, a Oncology Data Specialist is a valuable member of our team, who provides administrative and executive support and has the ability to interface with all levels of management throughout the hospital. Accurately obtain abstract, record and report cancer patient information from inpatient and outpatient sources in the cancer registry database for the purposes of supporting the hospital's mission to provide excellence in patient care, education, research and planning. Qualified candidates will demonstrate superior patient care and possess outstanding communication skills while adhering to our high standard of excellence.
Duties of a Oncology Data Specialist may include the following but are not limited to:
- Support the hospital's Cancer Program accreditation by completing all documentation and coding specifications in preparation for submission to the National Cancer Data Base, and meet the requirements set forth by the NYS DOH Public Health Law 2401.
- Case finding: locating all internal and external sources of cancer-related patient encounters, including all cancer-related pathology reports; all radiation and medical oncology consults and treatment summaries; all inpatient admissions and outpatient encounters. Utilizing all cancer related death certificates, all tumor board case lists provided to the registry for inclusion and reporting by hospital-based physician practices.
- Abstracting: accurately recording and coding required data in consistent with New York State and national guidelines into a software program.
- Quality Review: Respond to abstracting errors timely to maintain the required data accuracy and consistency.
Qualifications
Required: Associate's degree. Oncology Data Specialist Certification (ODS-C). At least 1 year of hospital/healthcare setting experience. Knowledge of New York State and national cancer coding standards. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology and advanced medical terminology. Excellent computer data entry and writing skills with ability to process high-volume work load.
Preferred: Bachelor's degree. Previous experience in cancer registry setting, leadership role, with advanced computer and writing skills.

Posting Overview: This position will remain posted until filled or for a maximum of 90 days. An initial review of all applicants will occur two weeks from the posting date. Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements:
- Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services.
- Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
- Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen.
- Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
- Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).
Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.
