GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Working under the supervision of Unit Nurse Manager and/or Medical Director of Operations, his/her primary roles are to assist with and facilitate efficient patient flow through the surgical unit, assist surgeon with surgical procedures and perform tasks related to the preparation and maintenance of surgical environment, maintain neat, clean and safe patient care areas and promote patient satisfaction and comfort in a professional and friendly manner.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works with the surgical team under the direct supervision of Unit Nurse Manager to provide care to the patient during the pre- and post-operative period.
- Escorts patients from reception area into procedure rooms.
- Prepares patient for surgical procedure and/or post-operative follow-up. Including: vital signs, pressure bandage, suture removal, steri-strip application.
- Measure, photograph and document surgical defect and repair. Apply pressure dressing to wound and educate patient and/or family on proper wound care.
- Completes surgical paperwork pre- and post-operatively. E.g. consent form, surgical record, and anatomical map, pathology form.
- Assists surgeon with Mohs surgery, excisions and subsequent repairs while supporting and maintaining use of sterile technique.
- Set-up treatment area for skin biopsies, dermatologic surgery, cosmetic procedures.
- Break-down and re-set/stock procedure rooms and instruments accordingly with patient turn-over.
- Maintain surgical equipment (i.e. ensuring instruments are cyclically sharpened and or replaced when needed).
- Participates in quality assurance activities in the department, with respect to patient care.
- Assist to define standards of excellence for patient care: participates in improvement of patient care services in a cost effective way.
- Participates in orientation of new permanent and temporary Dermatological staff.
- Orders medical supplies and maintains appropriate inventories to which help control cost.
- Assists with pre-operative check in (i.e. right patient, right site, and right pathology) and post-op check out, ensuring follow up appointment is made, and all questions have been answered.
- Cross cover front desk (i.e. check in, phone coverage, assist with scheduling surgical appointments).
- Participates in activities conducive to unit safety and operation.
- Selects and organizes supplies and equipment specific to the proposed surgical procedure.
- Anticipates changes and makes adjustments in case preparation according to the variation in the surgical procedure.
- Ensures procedure rooms are cleaned and restocked with appropriate surgical supplies daily.
- Maintains accurate surgical supply inventory and places orders using Ebuy to replenish stock.
- Accesses and utilizes Partners EPIC programs as related to patient documentation and scheduling.
- Assists in evaluating the quality and care of equipment, instruments and supplies.
- Cares for instruments and supplies according to established procedures.
- Prepares instruments and surgical trays for sterilization.
- Answers telephone and retrieve messages from voice mail as needed. Collaborates with Unit Nurse Leader to identify and meet learning needs.
- Seeks opportunities for continuing education and skill development.
QUALIFICATIONS:
20 hours- two shifts of 10 hours (7am-5:30pm M-F, exact days TBD)
EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or equivalent.
TRAINING:
Certified medical assistant a plus, surgical experience preferred.
