Inova Health System is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Physician Assistant-Certified (PA-C) or Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) to join our Emergency Medicine team. This unique position involves providing psychiatric evaluations and consultations to patients in the Emergency Departments (EDs) across all Inova hospitals via telemedicine. As a PA-C or PMHNP in this role, you will play a critical part in the initial assessment, diagnosis, and stabilization of patients presenting with psychiatric emergencies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations for patients presenting in the ED, using telemedicine technology to support multiple Inova hospital locations.
- Collaborate with ED physicians, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement appropriate treatment plans.
- Provide crisis intervention and stabilization for patients experiencing acute psychiatric distress, including those with suicidal ideation, severe depression, anxiety, psychosis, or substance use disorders.
- Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications as needed (for PMHNPs), ensuring safe and effective treatment of psychiatric symptoms.
- Facilitate referrals and transitions of care for patients requiring inpatient psychiatric admission or outpatient follow-up.
- Maintain thorough and timely clinical documentation, adhering to Inova's policies and regulatory standards.
- Participate in ED case conferences and multidisciplinary team meetings, contributing to discussions on patient care and best practices.
- Stay informed on the latest advancements in telepsychiatry and emergency psychiatric care, integrating new knowledge into clinical practice.
Qualifications:
- Master's or Doctoral degree in Nursing with a focus on Psychiatric/Mental Health (for PMHNPs) or a Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program (for PA-C).
- Active and unrestricted Virginia RN and NP licenses (for PMHNPs) or Virginia PA license (for PA-C).
- Board Certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) or National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) certification for PA-C.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in psychiatric/mental health or emergency care, with emergency or crisis care experience preferred.
- Proficiency in telemedicine and comfort with using technology to conduct remote assessments.
- Strong clinical skills in psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
- Ability to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team and provide expert psychiatric consultation in real-time.
