SUMMARY
The Technical Assistant performs specimen processing and distribution functions in preparation for analysis by a Medical Technologist after confirming the accuracy of the patient identification. Provides specimen collection information and any applicable special instructions to providers. Communicates test results to appropriate individuals in accordance with standard clinical laboratory procedure.
Job Responsibilities
Performs routine laboratory and general clerical tasks necessary for daily operation of laboratory. Confirms accuracy of patient identification prior to specimen processing. Collects, prepares, cleans and stores glassware and other lab equipment. Assists providers and laboratory personnel with appropriate information to properly request laboratory tests and collect patient specimens. Stocks and prepares media, reagents, chemical solutions and stains. Maintains records and files. Sets up laboratory and research equipment as directed.
Uses the laboratory information system and other computer applications to order patient specimens, report on specimen status, and retrieve test results. Performs related responsibilities as required. Completes assigned work so as to not adversely affect defined turnaround times or test priority. Notifies supervisor when workload exceeds capacity for completion by one person and requests help to prevent results reporting delays. Participates in departmental orientation process for new employees or trainees. Completes instruction checklists and required documentation. Completes training on new/revised procedures, policies, annually required training, and all other required documentation within time frame established by the supervisor and submits documentation by the due date 100% of the time. Assists providers with appropriate information to properly request laboratory tests and collect patient specimens. Uses the laboratory information system and other computer applications to order patient specimens, report on specimen status, and retrieve test results. Confirms accuracy of patient identification prior to specimen processing. Follows standard operating procedures for ordering and processing biological specimens and other products for laboratory testing.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED required
- Previous laboratory experience preferred
- Must possess the ability to follow laboratory procedures and occasionally function autonomously.
- Exposure to Clinical Laboratory procedures, personal computer functions, and laboratory information systems required
- Understanding of Clinical Laboratory test accessioning, specimen collection and processing, and result retrieval and reporting principals
