Overview
This position is part of the management team of the Department of Medicine. The position practices within the American Nursing Association (ANA) Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics. The registered nurse facilitates the coordination of care across the continuum and demonstrates safe practice within the domains of:
- Clinical judgment and decision-making
- Professional relationships
- Clinical leadership
- Clinical scholarship
The role will be responsible for oversight, mentoring, and training of the RN's, LPN's, and Medical Assistants in the clinical practices for the Department across multiple practice locations. Per the mission of the EVMS Medical Group, this position will lead all clinical quality initiatives in the practice and will work collaboratively with the Department Associate Chair, Quality & Clinical Affairs to support providers in reaching these goals. The Director of Nursing will be responsible for clinical staff compliance with procedures and processes put in place to ensure goal achievement. This position will work collaboratively and be a resource for the Divisional Practice/Office Managers in the department.
Responsibilities
Support Department and EVMS-MG Quality initiatives - EVMS-MG Quality of Standards and Patient Safety & Quality Care:
- Continuously monitors activities across divisions to ensure the practices conform to the EVMS Medical Group Quality Standards and other external quality indicators.
- Keep abreast of requirements and financial incentives related to Quality Payment Program and AMA/NCQA/HEDIS Measures Initiatives.
- Support EVMS-MG participation in Sentara Quality Initiatives (SQCN, Optima Medicare Advantage).
- Support development and implementation of policies and procedures to Quality Initiatives at EVMS Medical Group.
- Inform and educate providers, managers, and staff about departmental quality objectives and targets.
- Present quality mission, goals, and data to the department or select groups within the department.
- Work in collaboration with the Internal Medicine Associate Chair for Quality & Clinical Affairs to support Division Chiefs/Medical Directors in the development and implementation of quality improvement projects.
- Stay abreast of quality issues affecting EVMS Medical Group patient populations, such as Drug and Product Recalls, Pay for Performance, Chronic Disease Issues, CMS programs (MIPS/MACRA), Medicare Advantage Programs, SQCN, ACO.
Clinical staff oversight and workflow implementation:
- Maintains appropriate clinical staffing levels and plans appropriately for clinical staffing needs.
- Ensures smooth patient flow in all clinical areas.
- Monitors clinical staff electronic health record documentation and quality charting techniques to ensure compliance with medical records standards.
- Maintains a customer-focused practice environment with a monitoring process to provide feedback for faculty and staff. Notifies the Department leadership of any required corrections and ongoing concerns.
- Implements policies and procedures affecting practice operations.
- Recommends resources needed to maintain optimum efficiency and productivity of Department.
- Consults with leadership on clinical problems and interpretation of departmental policies to ensure patient needs are met.
- Directly supervise clinical nursing staff, RN, LPN supervisors, LPN's, and MA's.
- Assists in the recruitment, selection, and work assignments of clinical support staff.
- Employs, evaluates, and terminates clinical staff personnel in coordination with the Divisional Practice/Office Manager and EVMS Human Resources.
- Conducts performance evaluations in coordination with the Divisional Practice/Office Manager.
- Maintains OSHA, CLIA standards, and requirements.
- Maintains clean, safe, and well-stocked nursing areas.
- At all times, maintains confidentiality regarding patient and business functions of the clinic.
- Attends required in-service training/meetings.
- Participate in EVMS Medical Group committees as requested to develop plans and procedures for improvement of patient care and practice support operations.
- Adhere to all EVMS, EVMS-MG, State and Federal, Policies & Procedures as well as Regulatory and Compliance guidelines.
- Demonstrates positive leadership, customer service attitude/behavior.
- Completes all other duties as assigned.

Clinical Leadership: Supports the development of others and creates a practice climate of responsiveness and learning. This leadership supports the retention and recruitment of clinically competent nurses. - Achieves and maintains BLS certification as required by departmental standards.

Clinical Staff Training and Development:
- Clinical staff orientation, training, ongoing staff development, and clinical workflow implementations.
- Support protocols for delivery of clinical care through clinical staff training and workflow implementation.
- Supervises all clinical practice support functions (RN, LPN, MA) to ensure the delivery of quality healthcare safely and efficiently across multiple practice locations.
- Bears the full and ultimate responsibility that includes but is not limited to:
- Properly and adequately teaching, directing, and supervising the clinical staff.
- The outcomes resulting from the training and mentorship.
- Accountable for setting the standard for providing safe patient care by demonstrating organizational skills that maintain and coordinate safe delivery of quality care for assigned patients/families.
- Performs systematic patient and family assessment with the clinical teams relevant to practice settings and record the related health data.
- Coaches staff how to make informed judgments as to the specific problems and elements of nursing care mandated by a particular situation.
Qualifications
BSN and Virginia Registered Nurse licenses are required.
Five (5) years of nursing supervisory experience in a medical group, office, or hospital environment is required.
Progressively more responsible positions in clinical practice within a large medical group practice is strongly preferred.
Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with the public, partners, customers, and co-workers; while working cooperatively and effectively with others to achieve common goals.
Ability to manage time and resources to ensure assignments are completed accurately and deadlines are met. Meets attendance/punctuality requirements.
Ability to adapt to changing work environments, work priorities, and organizational needs with enthusiasm and energy. Takes independent action to address and resolve problems.
Ability to express ideas effectively and demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making.
Ability to deal with others in a direct honest manner and comply with all EVMS policies and procedures.
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, and percentages. Ability to interpret common data graphs, display data graphically, and apply concepts of basic algebra and statistical analysis.
