Job Summary
Responsible for direct patient care and multidisciplinary team support for all oncology clinical research patients at inpatient units and SCCC outpatient infusion sites. Clinical pharmacy specialist covering oncology solid tumor clinic. The roles and responsibilities include but are not limited to: reviewing new clinical trial protocols for scientific review, working with multidisciplinary teams, developing clinical guidelines/protocols, supporting clinical staff pharmacists, transitions of care coordination as needed, regulatory compliance monitoring, presentations, quality improvement projects, precepting residents and students.
Experience and Education
- Both PGY1 and PGY2 from an ASHP-accredited residency program, or PGY1 from an ASHP-accredited residency program with 5 years of progressive clinical practice within specialty; completion of specialty fellowship within specialty; or 8 years progressive clinical practice experience within specialty.
- Bachelor of Science (BS) degree or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy.
- Eligible for licensure by Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) is required and Texas license with TSBP within 30 days of date of hire.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification with course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) required by start date.
- Basic computer skills and data entry. English (speaking, reading, writing).
- Good general health and stress coping ability.
- Moderate physical effort: prolonged standing/walking, occasional lifting/carrying (up to 25 lbs.), reaching, bending, crouching.
Job Duties
- Performs job responsibilities in accordance with organizational and departmental policies and procedures, performance improvement objectives and environmental/infection control standards.
- Develops/implements processes to meet/comply with the Joint Commission and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinates staff training, competencies, certification and continued education specific to specialty.
- Assists clinical staff pharmacists with therapeutic monitoring, patient assessments, interpretation of lab values, and pharmacokinetic calculations.
- Identifies opportunities for process improvements, develops and implements policy and procedures for prompt, safe and efficient patient care.
- Participates in multidisciplinary in-services/meetings, publishes articles, individualized drug information, rounds, consults.
- Maintains high visibility/availability through participation in in-services, meetings and daily activities.
- Participates in the education/experiential training of pharmacy students and pharmacy residents.
- Mentors clinical staff pharmacists and supportive personnel.
- Performs computer order entry in an accurate, thorough and timely manner.
- Maintains patient confidentiality in accordance with University Medical Center policy.
- Demonstrates flexibility to fluctuating workload and a positive attitude in support of the hospital and management.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Ability to mentor clinical staff pharmacists and supportive personnel.
- Ability to perform computer order entry accurately and timely.
- Ability to review and update medication profiles and be cognizant of patient charges.
- Ability to review medication orders for appropriateness and safety.
- Ability to actively participate in new employee orientation and training.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in William P Clements University Hospital, Zale Lipshy University Hospital or UTSW Ambulatory Clinics.
