Position Summary:
Under the supervision of Executive Health Director, responsible for the delivery of comprehensive pharmaceutical services, as well as, all supervisory and management responsibilities related to the operation of the Nimkee Pharmacy. Ensure pharmacy activities are patient-oriented and directed toward optimal patient outcomes, health promotion, and disease prevention. All Nimkee staff must adhere to mandated reporting laws.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Participate in the recruitment, internal orientation, training, and retention of pharmacy staff.
- Plan, schedule, assign and direct the work of other professional and support staff in the Pharmacy.
- Provide annual evaluation of the Pharmacist, contract pharmacists and the Pharmacy Technicians.
- Ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained at all points of the pharmaceutical care process.
- Resolve with the appropriate medical provider, any concerns or questions, prior to the dispensing of medications.
- Monitor therapy to evaluate effectiveness and to prevent or detect adverse outcomes.
- Document all pertinent pharmacy activities such as: prescriptions filled, chart reviews, monitoring activities, interventions, consultations, and recommendations in the patient’s Electronic Health Record (EHR).
- Provide counseling to each patient (or caregiver) receiving medications and verify the patients understanding of the purpose and expected outcome of therapy.
- Be responsible for drug availability, distribution, and control are appropriate, safe, cost effective and meet the needs of patient care; comply with appropriate laws and standards.
- Maintain a routine inventory of all controlled substance that includes C-III through C-V on an annual basis and perpetually for C-II substances.
- Provide drug information, health promotion activities, and staff education relating to drug therapy and disease prevention.
- Manage care for select patients on warfarin therapy which includes monitoring pro-times, INR’s and dosing adjustments of prescribed medications.
- Assist on the committee involved in pain management for select patients at the clinic. Monitor fill dates on controlled substances and review pain agreement documents.
- Maintain medication stock levels in stock conditions.
- Assist in the Smoking Cessation clinic to include decisions as to which smoking cessation product would be best for each individual patient to serve their needs; follow up for these patients to achieve best outcomes.
- Help maintain and promote a smooth work flow in the prescription filing process. Provide an organized work area.
- Plan for improvements in pharmacy services and controls the utilization of resources.
- Achieve financial objectives by determining budgetary needs, submitting quarterly and annual reports, and participating in quarterly budget reviews as needed.
- Approve purchase orders for pharmaceutical orders.
- Investigate patient’s insurance errors; corrects to ensure reimbursement.
- Develop short and long-term departmental goals and objectives in conjunction with the pharmacy and medical clinic staff.
- Develop, implement, and maintain written policies and procedures for the provision of pharmaceutical care services for review and approval from the Executive Health Director.
- Monitor the overall performance of the pharmacy program in meeting the Indian Health Service Pharmacy Standards of Practice.
- Represent the pharmacy department in contacts with tribal and Indian Health Service administrators, professional organizations, colleges of pharmacy, etc.
- Maintain and periodically print a formulary of approved and stocked pharmaceuticals. Distribute the list to all medical providers when updates are made.
- Participate in appropriate training to maintain required continuing education credentials and to further knowledge in specific areas of pharmaceutical care.
- Adhere to patient confidentiality and comply with clinic policies and federal regulations under the Privacy rules of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
- Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times. Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
- Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Pharmacist License.
- Two years’ experience working as a Pharmacist in an outpatient pharmacy. Two years supervisory experience.
- Experience working with a wide range of medications, including OTC medications.
- Excellent computer skills.
- Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.

- State of Michigan Pharmacist License.
- DEA Controlled Substance License or ability to obtain upon hire.
- Ability to obtain HIPAA Certification, Blood Borne Pathogens Certification, BLS Certification and Safety Training within thirty days of hire.
- Native American preference shall apply to all positions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of federal laws and regulations regarding controlled substances.
- Knowledge of Pharmacy Accreditation Standards and Requirements for Ambulatory Health Care Organizations.
- Knowledge and understanding of the principles, procedures and associated regulations and standards for the delivery of community-oriented health care delivery systems.
- Knowledge and familiarity with Indian Self-Determination contracting and the IHS system including IHS staff by-laws, rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of budgetary and financial formulation management processes.
- Knowledge of pharmaceutical nomenclature; various formulas, strengths, and unit measures of drugs; pharmaceutical systems of weights and measures; work techniques and pharmacy procedures.
- Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
- Skill in preparing, reviewing and analyzing operational and financial reports.
- Skill in supervising, training and evaluating assigned staff.
