Registered Nurse (RN) Infusion Center - Fair Oaks location
The Registered Nurse Infusion Center ensures desired patient outcomes using and integrated approach. Provides direction and guidance to others regarding practice while serving as a resource, preceptor and mentor. Provides comprehensive patient and family education including information about treatments, medications, chemotherapy and other appropriate items, while keeping patients and families informed about all aspects of the plan of care. Works collaboratively with members of the healthcare team to provide patients and families with appropriate resources and support.
This is a Full Time (0.9 FTE) position. Our infusion nurses work four 9-hour shifts - Monday - Friday; 8:00am - 5:30 pm.
This clinic will move to 12-hour shifts in 2025 (6:30a-7:00p)
Job Responsibilities
- Provides safe, quality and comprehensive infusion services to oncology patients. Oversees all aspects of direct patient care in accordance with established nursing protocols and physician orders. Administers chemotherapy, IV fluids and other infusions via peripheral intravenous lines, central venous lines and other routes per physician orders and in compliance with departmental and professional practice standards.
- Makes sound clinical decisions based on experience, individualized care plans and patients' needs. Promotes clinical decision-making development in all team members. Delegates patient care activities and coordinates unit activities. Evaluates processes to achieve desired outcomes. Anticipates patient variances and makes revisions to plans of care. Anticipates ethical, spiritual and cultural patient/family needs while intervening to maximize desired patient outcomes. Documents all patient care activities, as per documentation standards, and assists healthcare team members with documentation.
- Assesses the severity of patient symptoms, communicates to physicians, records significant findings and intervenes as appropriate. Maintains a clean and safe working environment according to established department and Inova Health System standards. Complies with all infection control, quality and safety standards.
- Develops and participates in educating patients and families at all stages of patients' treatment as well as after being released from chemotherapy treatment. Assesses the educational needs of patients and families concerning alterations in health, the disease process and the overall plan of care. Plans and implements appropriate educational interventions. Evaluates the effectiveness and outcomes of patient and family education. Revises educational needs as appropriate throughout the care plan to ensure needs of patients/families are met. Provides oncology care education to patients and families as appropriate.
- Serves as a clinical resource, subject matter expert and mentor to healthcare team members to guide and ensure quality/safe patient care. Establishes and maintains the care coordination process between the Infusion Center and referring physician offices. Collaborates with the multi-disciplinary team and incorporates their expertise to achieve desired patient outcomes and obtain appropriate resources for patients and families.
- Participates in various committees and meetings as a representative of Oncology Services. Participates in quality improvement initiatives to positively impact patient and department outcomes. Evaluates the outcomes of documentation and contributes to related performance improvement initiatives. Incorporates the outcomes of team or committee work into practice. Integrates nursing research and findings into practice and performance improvement activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Certification - Basic Life Support from American Heart Association
Obtain the chemo card within the first three months of hire--- chemotherapy card from either the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) or the Association of Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurses.
Licensure Registered Nurse Upon Start Licensed or eligible for licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Registered Nurse
One year of infusion nursing experience for specialty area
Education - Bachelors Degree Nursing BSN or AD. If RN has an AD, Complete BSN within 5 years of start date.
