HJF is seeking a Research Assistant I to perform research and/or development in collaboration with others for projects. The Research Assistant is responsible for performing cellular and animal research under scientific supervision. This Research Assistant provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff. The Research Assistant also manages the day-to-day operations of the lab, including ensuring inventory is up to date, preparation of reagents, cleaning, and organization. The Research Assistant solves less complex problems in carrying out research projects in a laboratory environment and can offer support when dealing with larger issues. This is the first of four levels within the Research Assistant series.
This position will be in support of the Consortium for Health and Military Performance (CHAMP) under the Uniformed Services University department of Military and Emergency Medicine. The funded research project aims to investigate the mechanisms underlying heat-induced physiological changes using cell culture and animal models and to develop dietary interventions to prevent heat injury. The research project also studies key blood markers of tissue injury and dysfunction that are detectable in humans.

Note: This position is not currently active; however, the team will begin hiring practices within 30 days.
Responsibilities
- Performs in vitro research projects, including cell culture, microscopy, immunofluorescence, western blotting, and ELISA. Work with multiple cell types is likely and applicants should be confident in their sterile procedure. Follows instructions and standard operating procedures.
- Performs in vivo research projects related to animal handling, oral gavage, survival surgery, and tissue collection. Should be comfortable working with rodents. Follows instructions and standard operating procedures.
- Manages and organizes laboratory supplies, ensures inventory is up to date and sufficient, and maintains lab readiness. Ensures proper cleanliness and sanitation in accordance with Good Clinical and/or Good Laboratory practices.
- Maintains clear and accurate data collection records in accordance with Good Clinical and/or Good Laboratory practices.
- Assists in the preparation of reports, protocols, posters, publications, and grants. Mainly proofreading and editing; however, opportunities for writing may become available with sufficient skill.
- May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for the role.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's Degree
- Minimum of 0-2 years experience required
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions.
- Good communication and analytical skills.
- Experience and/or interest in working with animals.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 Public Trust.
Physical Capabilities
- Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs.
Work Environment
- This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.
Compensation
- The hourly pay range for this position is $19.72-$24.04. Actual hourly pay will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
