Job Summary: Provides support services to the laboratory technical staff and nursing. Incumbent will act as a laboratory information resource to health center staff and clients. Job incumbent is responsible for processing specimens for testing. Incumbent will provide appropriate and timely acquisition of patient specimens by capillary and venipuncture. Responsible for performing waived testing and a variety of clerical tasks related to specimen processing and patient billing.

Representative Duties: Under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Director and Phlebotomy Supervisor, job incumbent:
1. Procures specimens appropriate for the requirements of ordered tests.
2. Maintains a system providing proper patient preparation and proper specimen collection, identification, preservation, transportation, and processing.
3. Enters patient information and test results into laboratory information system.
4. Processes specimens for routine and STAT work using the laboratory information system.
5. Participates in the training and orientation of new employees.
6. Performs tests of moderate complexity to the extent of training, education, expertise and technical ability.
7. Maintains CPR certification.
8. Provides phlebotomy services whenever required, including on-call as needed. Responds to internal or external disasters as needed.
9. Conducts work in such a manner as to be organized and meet established deadlines.
10. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the developmental stages of patients throughout the continuum of life as they relate to the collection of specimens and the interpretation of results. Responsible for age specific knowledge.
11. Builds effective, supportive relationships with co-workers and internal/external customers. Uses positive interpersonal skills to promote success of team members and promote laboratory and health center goals.
12. Demonstrates skills in dealing with the public, staff, patients and their representatives and speaks courteously when on the telephone. Has the ability to relate to the public in a caring, tactful and courteous manner at all times.
13. Maintain strict confidentiality of patients.

Minimum Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Able to communicate orally and in writing in a tactful manner.
3. Able to pass the core competencies annually.
4. Able to work with constant interruptions and perform multiple tasks.
5. 100 successful venipunctures or equivalent experiences.
6. Experience with specimen collection/drawing pediatric patients/age specific.
7. Phlebotomy certification or experience preferred.
8. Current BLS certification preferred.
9. Must be able to pass ICPA background check.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of universal precautions and infection control practices. Pertinent knowledge and understanding of Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations regarding health care.
2. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
3. Ability to use plan, organize, set priorities, work as a team member, and effectively complete assignments.
4. Skill in informatics and processes, and the ability to communicate effectively electronically, orally, and in writing.
Supervision: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Physical demands: Able to spend long periods of time sitting or standing. Have good color discernment. May be exposed to communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens, and hazardous materials. May need to lift up to 40 pounds occasionally. Traveling from site to site (includes travel in small aircraft), standing, and stooping for extended periods of time. Exposure to a variety of working environments, including rural village communities
Summation: This position will have daily interaction with patients and health services staff. Position is obligated to follow CAIHC, TCC and principles to ensure safety of patients and staff. Must be able to work in a team environment or independently. Job incumbent must promote a courteous, professional and efficient public image to patients and referral providers/entities.
