The Registered Respiratory Therapist administers respiratory therapy procedures to examine, diagnose, and treat patients with respiratory and pulmonary disorders. The Respiratory Therapist assesses patient condition and consults with physicians to determine appropriate treatment plans, and monitors patient progress following procedures to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. The Respiratory Therapist also documents all patient care activities and ensures they comply with the appropriate quality of care standards and regulations of the department.
Responsibilities:
- Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
- Administers physician prescribed respiratory therapy, including oxygen, respiratory medication, PFTs, ABGs, and all mechanical ventilation.
- Performs evaluation procedures, both invasive and non-invasive, to determine respiratory care needs, and makes appropriate recommendations based upon department protocols ultimately improving patient outcomes and facilitating patient discharge.
- Monitors patients requiring mechanical ventilation including clinical assessment, routine rounds, troubleshooting, weaning, airway care, and diagnostic testing to ensure the safety and appropriate care of patients.
- Collects and analyzes sputum, blood and breath specimens for diagnosis. Measures the patients lung capacity to determine if there are any impairments.
- Offers diagnostic results and treatment suggestions based on the analysis of the patient.
- Communicates with other health care team members to ensure continuity of care and coordination of services.
- Assures smooth operation of the PFT and AGB laboratory, or other duties as assigned by the supervisor or manager.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Proficiencies):
- Professional competency in the science of Respiratory Care commensurate with the NBRC credential.
Required Experience, Education, Certification(s), License(s):
- Graduate of a AMA approved School of Respiratory Care.
- Registered by the National Board of Respiratory Care.
- Licensed by the State Board of Medicine or State Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
- Certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support/BLS.
- Associate's/2-year degree required.
Preferred Experience, Education, Degree, Certification(s), License(s):
- ACLS and/or NALS preferred.
- Prior experience preferred.
Since this position will require the selected candidate to engage in regular contact with children in the form of care, guidance, supervision or training, you will be required to meet the requirements of the Child Protective Services Act, including the Pennsylvania State Police criminal background check, the Pennsylvania Department of Welfare child abuse criminal background clearance, and an FBI fingerprint-based federal criminal records check. The selected candidate will not be allowed to commence working until all three (3) are completed satisfactorily.
Covid Vaccination is a requirement for employment at Jefferson for employees working at Jefferson's clinical entities or at the University.
