General Description:
Under the general supervision of the Emergency Department (ED) Manager, Director of Emergency Services, Provider, and the Registered Nurse (RN), the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is responsible for the provision of care for the assigned ED patients. This employee has access to medication storage areas, may receive, deliver and store medications. The EMT participates with the RN in planning, coordinating and implementing the plan of care to ensure quality, appropriateness, timeliness and effectiveness of services rendered.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide all aspects of ED care based on established standards. Demonstrate competency in all procedures within scope of practice, as appropriate to the population of patients served; the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient’s needs; a knowledge of growth and development; and an understanding of the range of treatment needed by these patients.
Order and stock supplies for the department.
Set up and assist in special procedures for the providers and nurses, including obtaining, preparing, and handling supplies, equipment and medicine necessary to perform the procedure (i.e. lidocaine, antibiotic cream, betadine, etc.)
Using a wheelchair, stretcher, hospital bed or other device, safely transport patients to inpatient units or to the department drop off/pick up area for discharge home.
Observe patients for unsafe behaviors and report changes in patient conditions to the RN.
Application of splinting devices and crutch fitting.
Wound care as directed by the provider and/or RN.
Assist with cardiopulmonary resuscitation hospital wide.
Assist with secretarial and cardiac monitoring duties as necessary.
Participate in ED process improvement projects, including but not limited to those related to Patient Experience. Attend 75% of all staff meetings.
Performs similar or related duties as assigned.
Knows fire, disaster and safety procedures and regulations as it pertains to the work area
Requirements:
Formal Education:
Vocational or other technical school, certification, training or apprenticeship required beyond high school.
Work Experience:
Minimum one (1) year experience
Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations:
EMT Florida State Certification and/or EMT/Paramedic National Registry Certification required
BCLS through the American Heart Association required
ACLS, PALS through the American Heart Association preferred
