The Pathologists' Assistant is an allied health professional, qualified by academic and practical training to provide service in anatomic pathology under the direction and supervision of a qualified board-certified anatomic Pathologist. The Pathologists' Assistant is responsible for performing the gross description and dissection of surgical specimens, or photograph specimens, performs frozen section procedures and participates in a variety of departmental activities and services; in addition, to the planning, organization, and maintenance of the autopsy suite. The Pathologists' Assistant ensures that timely and accurate clinical diagnostic information is provided to healthcare professionals so that patient care and customer service is of the highest quality.

ResponsibilitiesKey Accountability * Practice reflects knowledge of HIPAA, CAP, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare. |
* Coordinates and performs surgical tissue gross description and dissection and autopsy procedures ensuring compliance with regulatory/accreditation, quality, and fiscal requirements. |
* Researches and develops new autopsy and surgical specimen dissection procedures/methods/programs/processes which enhance quality, service, and/or financial position, or contributes to sales and outreach activities. |
* Provides technical assistance, consultation, and education to medical staff, CIHS personnel, and clients. Serves as an authoritative technical reference for a variety of activities such as research projects and grant proposals. |
* Participates in quality processes of the Laboratory, supports and utilizes LEAN principles/productivity standards and contributes to the formation of its vision, policies, standards, and culture. |
* This position may be assigned a specific mission to address in an emergency to assist in disaster response and recovery as part of the UnityPoint Health - St. Luke's Emergency Incident Command System. Situations of a critical nature may require an individual to perform multiple tasks until additional support can be obtained. Basic UPH Performance Criteria - Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines.
- Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.
- Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.
- Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
- Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
- Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance

Education: | Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university, AND successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Pathologists' Assistant program within the last five years. |
Experience: | Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Pathologists' Assistant program within the last five years. | 2 years of experience |
License(s)/Certification(s): | PA (ASCP) certification | Pathologists Assistant (ASCP) |
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: | Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English. |
