The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.
The Diversity and Leadership in International Affairs Project (DLIA) was launched in 2017 and embodies a two-fold mandate focused on internally and externally facing programming. We aim to take a full-scope approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) at CSIS. This includes supporting employees at every level through dedicated initiatives, ensuring support from top-level leadership, and establishing a transparent process for continuous engagement and growth. Alongside an internal portfolio serving over 250 CSIS staff, DLIA aims to promote diverse voices, facilitate meaningful conversations, and drive DEI strategy as an institutional imperative for the national security community.
CSIS is seeking two full-time, paid interns to assist the DLIA Program Coordinator and Director with substantial administrative and research support. Interns will be exposed to all facets of the DLIA strategic plan efforts. Candidates are expected to work Monday through Friday, totaling 35 hours per week, and complete the entirety of the six-month internship. Candidates must live in, or be willing to relocate to, the Washington Metropolitan area. The positions will be predominantly in-person with some flexibility for remote working. The anticipated start date for the internship will be no earlier than June 10, 2024.
The hired candidate will be paid hourly, commensurate with experience ($17.00/hour for current undergraduate hires, $18.00/hour for hires with a bachelor’s degree, and $19.00/hour for hires with a master’s degree).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Monitor developments on timely diversity, equity, and inclusion issues to support DLIA's programmatic work and the Director’s external engagements.
- Provide research and programmatic support for all DLIA events, workshops, and trainings.
- Assist in event planning, outreach, and day-of coordination for events.
- Regularly update the DLIA internal site with resources as needed.
- Actively manage and create content for DLIA’s LinkedIn and Twitter accounts to further increase the program’s digital presence
- Conduct research and summarize literature from various sources on different topics related to the intersections of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), foreign policy, national security, and the workplace.
- Contribute to preparatory research for media, meetings, publications, and / or Driving Impact.
- Assist in research for CQ’s, commentaries, or reports on the latest DEI and national security topics.
- Identify, attend, and take notes on internal and external events relevant to the work of the Diversity and Leadership in International Affairs Project.
- Perform a variety of administrative and logistical tasks as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE :
- Associate degree required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Professional, academic, or personal interest in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Previous administrative experience strongly preferred.
- Advanced proficiency with entire Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Must be detail-oriented, well-organized, with the ability to manage multiple projects & priorities simultaneously.
- Possess strong time management skills.
- Able to exercise effective judgment, sensitivity, and creativity to changing needs and situations.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

* Candidates must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Microsoft Project or other scheduling related systems and have experience working with On Screen Takeoff and/or MC2 type software is preferred
* Candidates must have a strong understanding of conceptual estimating, estimating techniques, and cost control
* Ability to prepare proposals with minimum supervision
* Must be comfortable working in teams
* Strong written and verbal communication skills. Candidates should be able to clearly articulate bid inclusions, exclusions, and proposals clarifications with owners and subcontractors
* Must be able to multitask and prioritize responsibilities
