Title: Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner - Hepatitis C
Salary: $98,696 - $136,510.40 / Posted Thru: 10-24-24
Location: Remote/Virtual - Must Live and Work in Michigan
Occasional Travel Statewide
Purpose: This position will function as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner and will play a vital role in Michigan's efforts to eliminate hepatitis C (HCV) by providing expertise in HCV testing and treatment administering and overseeing a variety of assignments related to HCV elimination. This position will work closely with community-based partners Syringe Service Programs, Local Health Department, and agencies that provide Medication Assisted Treatment, to increase HCV testing and treatment in facilities where people who have historically used drugs or currently use drugs seek health services. This position will be housed in the Hepatitis and Tuberculosis Section of the Emerging Infectious Diseases Division at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Initiate appropriate assessment of patient's health status, ranging from focused to comprehensive, depending upon the setting (e.g., emergency, structured screening, scheduled visit).
- Obtain patients' health history from interview of patient and others, and from review of pertinent health records.
- Consult with colleagues, supervising Physicians, specialists, and other health professionals as appropriate.
- Order pertinent diagnostic tests to assess initiation of hepatitis C treatment.
- Perform diagnostic tests, within the scope of practice.
- Interpret health information and establish diagnoses consistent with the accumulated data.
- Formulate treatment plan, ensuring timely provision of necessary health care services.
- Order necessary medications and other therapeutic equipment and supplies within the scope of practice.
- Educate and inform patients regarding the nature of the illness and the progress of evaluation and treatment.
- Educate patients regarding health promotion and disease prevention.
- Analyze accumulated health information and collect additional observational, interview, historical, physical examination, and diagnostic data, modifying treatment as appropriate.
- Make health record entries which are legible, concise, and timely.
- Advocate for the rights of patients.
- Participate in formulating, interpreting, implementing, and evaluating objectives, policies, and procedures.
- Conduct audits related to advanced practice health care techniques and takes part in quality assurance programs.
- Always represent the best interests of MDHHS and MPHI.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Education: Completion of a valid PA/NP degree from an accredited institution.
License/Certification: Must be a licensed Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in the state of Michigan.
Experience: Two years of professional experience as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner.

- Knowledge of health sciences, including anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and microbiology.
- Knowledge of the fields of specialized medicine, especially regarding hepatitis C.
- Knowledge of laboratory medicine.
- Knowledge of patient history and physical examination methods.
- Knowledge of clinical medical procedures.
- Knowledge of patient rights and ethical professional practices.
- Skill in performing physical examinations and routine clinical.
- Skill in utilizing appropriate laboratory techniques.
- Ability to develop a therapeutic relationship with patients.

- Ability to identify normal and abnormal findings and initiate appropriate follow-up.
- Ability to maintain records, and prepare reports and correspondence related to the work.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Job may require moderate physical effort including lifting materials and equipment of <25# and involves viewing a CRT or VDT screen 25% to 50% of the time. Work may take place in a standard office environment or at partner agencies. Requires valid vehicle operator's license where needed to perform duties of the position. In-state and out-of-state travel may be required.
Responsibility for the work of others: No assigned responsibility.
Impact on projects, services, and operations: This position will play a vital role in Michigan's HCV elimination efforts, ensuring appropriate testing and treatment of people living with HCV and building capacity for HCV testing and treatment at agencies most likely to provide services to people at higher risk of acquiring HCV.
