Primary Function/General Purpose of Position:
Performs Holter monitors and 12 lead EKG, and assists with cardiac stress testing.
Employment Qualifications:
- High school graduate or equivalent with 1-2 years EKG experience or minimal training in the allied health profession.
- Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions, and communicate effectively at a level generally acquired through completion of a high school education or equivalent.
- Knowledge of proper set-up, operation, and maintenance of stress testing systems, computerized EKG, and Holter equipment, at a level generally acquired during 3-6 months of experience.
- Must use and comprehend basic computer applications and diagnose common equipment problems.
- BLS required.
Essential Job Functions:
- Transmits EKGs to the system for electronic storage, editing, and retrieval.
- Operates the EKG machine, stress system, and Holter monitors.
- Verifies patient identification in compliance with the Joint Commission standards.
- Applies electrodes to the chest and extremity areas, adhering to the standards established for proper lead placement.
- Prepares the patient's chest area (shave, clean, abrade skin) when needed to obtain high-quality tracings for EKGs, stress testing, and Holter monitor.
- Performs artifact-free 12 lead EKG and rhythm strip recordings on inpatients and outpatients.
- Verifies patient information to ensure accuracy (name, MR#, account#, location, time, date, and person performing the test).
- Processes EKGs (routine, stat, and pre-op EKGs) for interpretation.
- Responds to Code Blue's and RRT's as requested.
- Performs Holter Monitoring procedures, including application and disconnection of Holter monitors.
- Assists with cardiac stress tests, explains the procedure to the patient, obtains patient consent, and prepares the patient's chest for electrode placement.
- Maintains equipment in clean and proper working condition and notifies the supervisor of malfunctioning equipment and needed supplies in a timely manner.
- Participates in cross-training and orienting new employees to the department.
- Participates in training of nursing staff on EKG performance and operation of EKG machines per chest pain accreditation guidelines.
- Demonstrates knowledge of principles of growth and development of the life span and assesses data reflective of the patient's status.
- Accurately records in the electronic medical record.
- Accurately charges for procedures in the electronic medical record.
- Provides patient care to adults and geriatrics.
Other Job Functions:
- Transports patients to and from Heart Center.
- Schedules procedures.
- Participates in Quality Improvement Program.
- Participates in Daily Huddle and attends 80% of staff meetings.
- Performs clerical duties as needed; answering phones, faxing reports.
Working Conditions:
- May come into contact with human blood and other potentially infectious materials. Individuals in this position are required to exercise universal precautions, use personal protective equipment, and learn the policies concerning infection control.
- Works in a patient care area with little exposure to dust, dirt, noise, etc.
