A Brief Overview:
The Veterinary Technician will be responsible for performing a wide variety of laboratory tasks including: daily monitoring, care, and maintenance of animals, administration of medications, anesthesia, surgical assistance, monitoring physiological parameters, collecting blood samples, assisting with necropsies and data collection. Under general supervision, collects, processes, and coordinates data, in support of simulation studies and education. Arranges, performs, and records simulations and interviews in strict accordance with specified protocols. Assists a wide range of personnel from primary care technicians to physicians.
What you will do:
- Knowledge and application of NorthShore policies and procedures that apply to job and area of responsibility.
- Performs physical examinations of animals and records findings to facilitate simulation center educational activities.
- Observe animals for signs of illness or disease.
- Treatment of animals under the direction of a veterinarian.
- Anesthetize and prepare animals for surgical procedures.
- Maintain comprehensive accurate medical records and make daily entries into a lab notebook, maintaining appropriate USDA, GLP, and NIH records of facility and equipment sanitation and maintenance.
- Maintain inventory and prepare surgical packs, sterilization procedures, and adequate supply of stock or other items as needed.
- Assist with the planning and implementation of simulation activities to ensure orderly operations of the lab.
- Identify and compile lists of potential simulation subjects in accordance with study objectives and parameters, as appropriate to the individual position.
- Develop or assist in the development of simulation and interview schedules; contact potential subjects to introduce and explain study objectives and protocol, and to arrange simulation sessions and interviews, either in person or by telephone.
- Conduct and record face-to-face and/or telephone interviews with subjects, in accordance with predetermined interview protocol, data collection procedures, and documentation standards.
- Review and edit data to ensure completeness and accuracy of information; follow up with subjects to resolve problems or clarify data collected.
- Responsible for accuracy and maintenance of evaluation forms and rosters.
- Be proactive in setup and breakdown of various programs.
- Be flexible with arrival and departure if courses are on off times.
- Maintain overall security of facility and strict adherence to policies of both CSTAR and MISTI lab.
- As appropriate to the specified position, code and verify data in accordance with specified protocol and coding procedures, and enter data into a computer database and/or spreadsheet application for subsequent analysis.
- Lead, guide, and review the work of students engaged in simulator activities as appropriate.
- Perform related duties as required or assigned.
- Ability to work with multiple computer-based equipment.
- Display courteous and professional manner through interaction, appearance, attitude, and written and oral communication with principal investigators and other employees in accordance with corporate Service Excellence expectations.
- Participate in Quality Assurance to ensure optimal simulations.
- Maintain confidentiality of simulator subjects.
- Provide optimal customer service through direct contact with simulator subjects/students.
- Ability to work with various medical educators.
- Comply with any research guidelines as dictated by the NSUHS Corporation.
- Assume responsibility for appropriately setting up all equipment for specific educational courses.
- Maintain and replace equipment as determined by use.
- Maintain appropriate stock of equipment utilized in the simulation center.
- Assist in the functional operation of equipment at both sites.
What you will need:
- Associates Degree Required or Bachelors Degree Preferred
- 2 years of surgical Vet tech experience or Surgical SIM lab experience
- Prior experience in research working with large animals or medical training (anesthesia or surgery) preferred.
- Familiarity with common laboratory equipment is a plus.
- Must have the ability to use fluoroscopy, ultrasound, and/or other imaging technologies.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, and an outgoing, courteous manner to interact effectively and pleasantly with a wide variety of hospital and public individuals.
- Proficient computer skills, including the ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Apple, and PowerPoint.
- Knowledge of Medical Terminology. Knowledge of planning and scheduling techniques.
- Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
- Interviewing and data collection skills. Ability to understand and apply specified simulation procedures and protocols.
- Ability to evaluate, verify, and edit simulator data.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to lead and train staff and/or students.
- Associates degree in Biology, Physiology, Veterinary Technology, or Vet medicine required. Bachelors preferred.
