Job Title: Phlebotomist/Laboratory Technician II
The Phlebotomist/Laboratory Technician II greets patients, processes paperwork and specimens, and logs all tests into the computer. Responsibilities include performing heelsticks, fingersticks, and venipunctures on patients across all age groups.
Key Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate professional customer service skills whenever interacting with customers.
- Perform receptionist and clerical duties.
- Greet patients arriving in the phlebotomy laboratory.
- Answer phone calls in an appropriate manner.
- Log into computer systems, accessing EPIC and Sunquest.
- Print and fax results as needed, ensuring HIPAA protocols are followed.
- Perform phlebotomy and related responsibilities.
- Perform routine and difficult venipuncture on various patient populations using aseptic and proper techniques.
- Collect blood cultures using aseptic techniques.
- Prepare the blood drawing area for patients, maintaining an appropriate inventory of supplies and cleanliness.
- Log, use, and maintain Sunquest collection manager devices.
- Generate and affix barcode labels to specimens after collection in the presence of the patient.
- Ensure all tests checked off on the requisition are logged into the computer with all pertinent information included.
- Create HOV and release test orders using the EPIC Hyperspace system.
- Produce barcode labels for specimens after collection.
- Ensure that specimens are appropriately labeled and collected.
- Maintain correct paperwork and procedures.
- Process specimens for testing, including accessioning and manual log-in procedures, prioritizing samples, and centrifugation.
- Aliquot samples as needed while maintaining sample integrity.
- Maintain a safe work area and adhere to all safety, infection control, and OSHA guidelines and policies.
- Perform support services as assigned and other duties as required.
- Be responsible for day-to-day operations of the laboratory, including safety and compliance with OSHA.
- Comply with The Joint National Patient Safety Goals and BWH Hospital and Laboratory policies and procedures.
- Rotate to all ambulatory labs, including offsite locations and inpatient phlebotomy when needed.
