The Echocardiographer is responsible for performing cardiac ultrasound procedures. They also assist a trained, credentialed cardiology attending during stress echocardiogram and TEE procedures. Additionally, the position requires complete knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology.
Responsibilities
A day in the life of an Echocardiographer at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Performs echocardiograms including 2-D, 3-D when applicable, strain, M-Mode, color flow imaging, and Doppler studies.
- Recognizes the need for contrast imaging enhancement and administers as per protocol.
- Responsible for the preliminary measurement and documentation within the Cardiovascular Information Systems to be used by reading physicians and cardiologists in finalizing echocardiography reports. All critical findings must be timely escalated and communicated to the ordering physicians and cardiologists.
- Obtains patient history and performs procedures as ordered.
- Helps patients onto and off of the bed.
- Notifies supervisor in cases of acute or life-threatening abnormalities.
- Obtains digital acquisition and storage of echo study in Cardiovascular Information Systems for physician interpretation.
- Transports equipment to the patient's room for bedside studies, as needed.
- Calibrates, cleans, and maintains equipment and reports breakdowns and supply needs.
- Follows special procedure policies regarding probe maintenance and sterile processing (i.e., TEE).
- Completes EPIC workflow and processes billing charge requisition, log books, worksheets, and reports, as applicable.
- Cleans and prepares the room for the next patient.
- Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
- Adheres to the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) and those identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.
- Participates in performance initiatives and monitoring.
- Performs other tasks as assigned.
- Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Graduate of a certified cardiovascular technology school and/or graduate of an accredited ultrasonography program with a specialty in cardiac sonography.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills that may include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Preferred:
- One-year clinical echocardiography experience.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Certification or Registered Cardiac Sonographer Certification.
- AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
Working Conditions
Lifts a minimum of 50 lbs., pushes and pulls a maximum of 375 lbs., and stands a minimum of 4 hours a day.
