As an Occupational Health Nurse, you will report to the Occupational Health Nurse Supervisor and functionally responsible to the Associate Corporate Medical Director. You will be responsible for promoting the health and safety of BASF Wyandotte employees through implementation of the health surveillance program and meeting regulatory requirements, rendering nursing care to the ill and injured, and directing emergency medical response. The Occupational Health Nurse is a representative to employees, their managers and the local medical community.
As a Occupational Health Nurse, you create chemistry by...
- Providing nursing diagnoses, specialized testing and evaluation of results, assessments of patients presenting symptoms of injury/illness in the Medical Department as well as in plant emergency situations, providing direct care, including treatment of work-related injuries/illnesses using approved protocols. You will utilize standard nursing orders for direction and inform appropriate persons of patient’s condition and progress and maintains appropriate documentation. You will also be in charge of dispensing medications and immunizations and administering treatments as directed by site physician.
- Directing the activities of contract physicians, within the scope of practice defined by the State of Michigan and the BASF Corporate Medical Department. You will be in charge of medical triage, independently judging severity, disposition and referral. Must be available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week to take first call for injuries/illnesses from first aiders and to consult about other work-related health issues as needed. You will also coordinate arrangements for transportation of employees to local medical facilities for evaluation and treatment.
- Collaborating with industrial hygiene, safety and management regarding perceived health problems related to workplace exposure and promotes the observance of good hygiene and safety practice in the performance of employees’ job duties. In addition, you will be in charge of compliance with medical aspects of OSHA and BASF Corporate standards, including administering medical surveillance programs according to BASF Corporate Medical Policies & Procedures.
- Assisting all levels of site management in the control of lost time:
- With the assistance of the site physician, you will evaluate employees returning to work after absences, injuries, illnesses and surgeries. You will reduce medical absenteeism by facilitating early return to work from STD and LTD, as well as monitor early return to work, and limited duty assignments.
- You will be expected to communicate with STD, LTD, or FMLA verification and case management services; and may assist with third party notification for STD, LTD, or FMLA case management or tracking.
- Representing BASF in community and other outside activities and develops relationships with local practitioners. You will assist and implement health awareness programs, including the Hepatitis B vaccine program, and will be active with other activities and training of the emergency medical response team.
- Scheduling exams and participating in pre-placement and other periodic examinations, this includes performing precision testing (e.g., spirometry, audiometry, breath alcohol etc.) and communicating said results, as well as obtaining urine specimens, including urine drug screens, and performing skin prick testing with physician supervision.
- Ensuring maintenance and upkeep of the site’s medical department and inventory control of medications and supplies, as well as recording, processing and maintaining current and accurate medical records for each employee, while maintaining medical confidentiality.
If you...
- Are a Registered Nurse, graduated from an accredited school of nursing, with a current Michigan Nursing License and in good standing with the State of Michigan
- Have 5+ years' experience in Occupational and/or non-occupational nurse setting (hospital emergency room or comparable acute care settings).
- Are able and or willing to do phlebotomy
- Have working knowledge of current treatment, therapy and medications, knowledge of occupational health emergency first aid practices and initial occupational injury treatment.
- Possess good human relations skills
- Have excellent computer skills, including MS Office
- Have any of the following it would be a plus: working knowledge of applicable OSHA regulations or Michigan Worker's Compensation Laws, Certification in audiometry by CAOHC, spirometry by NIOSH-approved course or Breath Alcohol Technician and DOT Urine Specimen Collector, continuing education courses in nursing and occupational health medical surveillance and/or AAOHN Certification.
- Have Intensive Care or Emergency room background would be preferred.
