Job Description:
The OR Tech I performs various duties as a member of the surgical team to ensure a safe and successful operative procedure. This position functions under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and directly reports to Surgical Services management.
It is expected that the ORT I will support system-wide and surgical operations initiatives and practices. In addition, this person will actively participate in the surgical operations safety plan as outlined.
This posting is for Full Time, Part Time, and PRN/On Call needs.

Surgical Operations offers Surgical Technologist (ST) positions at each of these facilities:
- American Fork Hospital
- Orem Community Hospital
- Spanish Fork Hospital
- Utah Valley Hospital
Interested candidates may post their application for the overall range of units but if desired, can elect to work in their single facility of choice. The surgical operations environment is team-oriented with multi-disciplinary groups including surgeons, gastroenterologists, dentists, anesthesiologists, surgical techs, orderlies, and nurses. The surgical technologist is a central team member in these diverse teams and has many different levels of colleagues to lean on and collaborate to provide the patient with a safe and extraordinary experience.
Care of the patient in surgery is a complex yet intriguing environment. Many of our facilities offer general, urology, plastics, ENT, Ophthalmology, and Orthopedics. Larger facilities also include neurosurgery, cardiovascular, trauma, and transplant services. Surgical techs are compensated for certification. We also offer career progression with Surg Tech levels I, II, and III and in some facilities, specialty team leadership positions.
Surgical services shifts are primarily Monday-Friday, daytime work and allow for 8, 10- and 12-hour shifts equaling part- or full-time hours, depending on personal circumstances and availability. Some limited night shifts with a set schedule are available for the person who wants to work nights allowing for family or school obligations.
Minimum Qualifications (Level I)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers.
- Completion of an accredited Operating Room Technician program (ORT).
- Or graduated from a non-accredited surgical tech program within the past six months, but not currently eligible to sit for Tech in Surgery exam (NCCT).
- Or two years of scrub tech experience in hospital or military surgical services within the last three years.
- Or International training equivalent and legally authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
- Active National Certification as an OR Tech in Surgery or Certified Surgical Technologist.
Certification is required after hire as follows:
- Surgical Technologists who graduated from an accredited program must certify within one year of hire (may use either NBSTSA or NCCT certification).
- Surgical Technologists who have graduated from non-accredited programs or completed on-the-job or military training, need to certify as soon as possible.
Physical Requirements:
- Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, sterile indicator tags, colors, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
- Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
- Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment and instruments with precision and accuracy.
- Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients.
- Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment.
