The primary role of the Accountant is to provide leadership support to management with general accounting responsibilities for fixed assets, general accounting, property tax and contracts. Belk Accountants are responsible for a range of accounting duties, including coordinating, preparing, reconciling, analyzing and making actionable recommendations on financial information. Accountants play a key role within the Belk Finance organization, supporting month-end, year-end, and financial planning activities.
Responsibilities include the sales/use tax support of a dynamic multi-state environment that includes completion of Sales/Use tax registrations, maintenance of sales/use tax exemption certificates, monthly filings, compliance, and audits. The position requires strong tax research skills, as well as solid application and project management skills in order to support the varied business activities that impact the collection and reporting of sales/use taxes. Additionally, the position will be tasked with assisting the Manager - Sales and Tax with tax planning projects.
Job Functions
- Perform monthly close activities including preparation and review of journal entries, balance sheet, income statement, variance analyses and other KPI reports.
- Provides timely and accurate record keeping and reporting.
- Designs, and adheres to, strong accounting controls to ensure SOX compliance. Addresses SOX requests for documentation and controls review as assigned.
- Ensure accurate preparation of annual budgets for depreciation related general ledger accounts. Update and report both depreciation and tax forecasts to Financial Planning.
- Assist with monthly Belk CAPEX processes and serve as a contact for the necessary accounting adjustments of capital transactions.
- Support monthly capitalization process of fixed assets as well as ad-hoc disposals, asset transfers, etc.
- Supports the month-end closing process, including preparation of statements for assigned General Ledger Accounts, including timely reviews of statements and researching major variances.
- Conducts timely general ledger reconciliation and analysis.
- Develops and leverages automated tools for reviewing, analyzing, and reporting financial results.
- Assists in the preparation of annual expense budgets.
- Assists with internal and external audit requests.
- Research, designs, and implements process improvements to improve productivity.
- Assist with finalization of Workday Financials ERP implementation.
- Identification and implementation of efficiencies and accounting technologies that expedite, simplify, and increase the value of our accounting close and reporting.
Minimum Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.
- 1-2 years of related work experience.
Preferred Education & Experience:
- CPA or CPA candidate.
- 2-3 years of relevant experience; fixed assets experience a plus.
Knowledge & Skills
- Proficient in MS Excel, MS Access and/or other database tools.
- Hyperion (Essbase), Lawson/Workday Financials experience.
- Ability to research, compile, analyze and interpret complex data.
- Ability to think critically and make recommendations.
- Experience in the retail/e-commerce industry (preferred).
- Strong analytical, communication and collaboration skills.
- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
