Assistant Director of Finance Job Description
Leadership:
- Provide accounting / financial leadership and guidance to the organization, aligning strategies with overall business objectives and organizational mission.
- Provide accounting leadership alongside the Director of Finance for the Accounting team while fostering a culture of communication, continuous improvement, accountability, and collaboration.
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the department.
- Communicate complex financial information in a clear and concise manner to leadership.
- Provide financial education and guidance to other departments as needed.
Accounting, Financial Reporting, Budgeting & Forecasting:
- Responsible for timely month-end close and the creation and analysis of financial reports.
- Responsible for yearly close.
- Provide monthly reports to leadership including available restricted funds and donations, reports to board and policy council, financials to Director of Finance.
- Review all monthly transactions for accuracy.
- Journal entry processing, including reviewing and approving entries submitted by accounting team and all monthly and closing entries.
- Assist Director of Finance in the creation, revision and implementation of accounting-related operational controls.
- Assist Director of Finance with budget creation and tracking, working closely with department heads to develop accurate and achievable financial plans.
- Monitor and manage the organization's cash flow to ensure liquidity and financial stability.
- Track restricted funds and donations to organization.
- Assist Director of Finance with yearly audit as well as contractual audits.
- Reconcile bank accounts, reconcile balance sheets accounts and review other balance sheet reconciliations performed by accounting team.
- Review and approve monthly grant reports as assigned by the Director of Finance.
- Review and approve invoices for payment.
Serve as backup for Director of Finance as needed (purchase requests, voucher approval, meetings, etc).
Responsible for monthly benefits accrual calculations and produce salary and benefits report to accounting team.
Coordinate and oversee financial aspects of annual fund raiser such as ensuring credit card platform has items for purchase entered and invoicing donors for items bought at fund raisers.
Strategic and Operational Planning:
- Assist Director of Finance in collaboration with executive leadership to develop and implement financial strategies that support organizational goals.
- Work with other department managers to maximize efficiency and cost management.
Technology, Process and Continuous Improvement:
- Leverage technology to streamline financial processes and reporting capabilities.
- Conduct financial analysis to identify trends, opportunities, and areas for improvement.
- Provide recommendations to optimize financial performance and support strategic decision-making.
- Other assigned duties or special projects as needed.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor of Science degree in accounting or finance is required.
- Valid Certified Public Accountant (CPA) License or be in candidacy for such is strongly preferred.
- Master of Science in Accounting or Finance is highly desirable.
- A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in positions directly related to the duties and responsibilities as enumerated and preferably relevant work experience in the non-profit association world.
- Experience with new accounting system implementation projects in the recent past is a plus.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Proven ability to meet monthly, quarterly, and annual deadlines; strong analytical skills; hands-on experience with SAGE Intacct and the full suite of Microsoft Office products with emphasis on Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; proven interpersonal skills; ability to work well within a team environment and interact effectively with staff, members of the council, and others.
- Ability to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions and provide actionable recommendations.
Salary: $75k-$85k
