GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
The Senior Manager, GAAP Reporting & Accounting is responsible for leading and overseeing all aspects of the GAAP financial statement close and reporting processes (quarterly and annual U.S. GAAP-basis financial statements, MD&A, and other forms or presentations). The incumbent is also responsible for reviewing the U.S. GAAP-basis accounting for certain balances, including journal entries.
This position sits in West Des Moines, IA and will work a hybrid, on-site schedule.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manages the financial statement close process and reviews quarterly financial data used in Form 10K and Form 10Q filings and reporting packages to our parent company.
- Leads a team that works with personnel across departments to obtain information needed to prepare quarterly and annual financial statements, MD&A, and other forms or presentations.
- Leads a diverse team of employees with responsibility for managing the employee life cycle and experience, including but not limited to, selection and retention of talent, continuous feedback and performance management, reward and recognition, corrective action, and employee development.
- Manages and reviews group reporting packages, Form 10K, Form 10Q, and other filings or presentations using Workiva.
- Manages and reviews accounting for various balances on a U.S. GAAP-basis, including preparing or reviewing analysis supporting balances and preparing or reviewing related journal entries.
- Manages and reviews analysis used to calculate or analyze distributable operating earnings.
- Ensures compliance with internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures to maintain the integrity of financial reporting.
- Ensures prudent management of expenses for area of responsibility by establishing and monitoring department, team, and/or project budget.
- Performs other related work as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited college or university in accounting, finance, or related field of study; plus six (6) years of progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Prior experience and proficiency with MS Excel. Experience with ERP systems is a plus.
- Experience working with Form 10K, Form 10Q, and other forms and exhibits filed with the SEC.
- Prior supervisory experience preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATIONS:
Certified Public Accountant preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of the life and annuity insurance industry, including products issued, operating activities performed across the entity, and the regulatory environment.
- Broad understanding of financial statement accounts of a life and annuity company, including investment and actuarial balances.
- Knowledge of applicable SEC financial reporting rules and regulations.
- Ability to apply prior knowledge and experience working in Workiva and Excel to performance goals.
- Proficiency with filing SEC Forms and Exhibits.
- Ability to successfully handle pressure and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
- Ability to multi-task and effectively prioritize work to meet tight quarter-end deadlines, ensuring all tasks are completed on time.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with internal and external parties at all levels.
- Strong attention to numeric and other detail; ability to work with mathematical concepts and apply to practical situations.
