In this job, you’ll be part of the Technical Accounting group within the Controller’s Department of Southern California Edison’s (SCE) Finance Organizational Unit. You will be an instrumental member of a group of professionals focused on providing accounting interpretation and implementation guidance associated with accounting standards.
Specifically, within the technical accounting group, you will be exposed to a wide variety of complex accounting issues and be an instrumental part of the decision-making process. The position requires a detailed knowledge of U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP) in areas such as leases, revenue recognition, derivatives, and variable interest entities as well as ASC 980 – Utilities.

Responsibilities
- Conducts the critical assessment, education, and effective implementation of significant accounting guidance updates on a US GAAP, Statutory and Regulatory basis.
- Acts as a subject matter expert to assist external financial reporting team in reviewing quarterly and annual reports filed with the SEC.
- Engages with external auditors on complex topics to align proposed accounting treatment.
- Provides technical accounting guidance and application related to significant strategic and complex transactions through all phases to ensure accounting considerations are evaluated.
- Partners with senior level leadership in Finance areas across the various businesses and corporate departments regarding appropriate accounting treatment for significant, complex, and strategically important transactions.
- Delivers technical accounting advice to other departments with regards to accounting for financial products and structures.
- Supports the Finance function in compliance with the SCE standard accounting practices and US GAAP.
- Supports audit/regulatory exam review of accounting conclusions.
- Interprets the impact of emerging US GAAP and Statutory accounting guidance for all lines of business and leads the cross-functional working group that facilitates the accounting and operational objectives ensuring SCE's readiness upon implementation.
- Conducts technical accounting training when and if needed.
- Collaborates with cross-functional teams to ensure accurate and consistent application of our capital vs expense accounting policies.
A material job duty of all positions within the Company is ensuring the protection of all its physical, financial and cybersecurity assets, and properly accessing and managing private customer data, proprietary information, confidential medical records, and other types of highly sensitive information and data with the highest standards of conduct and integrity.
Minimum Qualifications
- Seven or more years of experience in accounting.
- Experience with interpreting and applying US GAAP.
- CPA (or equivalent).
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree or higher in accounting, Business, Finance, or related discipline.
- Experience in a public accounting firm (preferably with a Big 4 firm) with large SEC clients or experience at FASB or SEC.
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills combined with proven business and financial acumen.
- Strong technical and general accounting knowledge and ability to research FASB, SEC, and other accounting literature.
- Experience in contract reviews.
- Experience in energy/utility industry.
You should know
This position’s work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days. Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to work and reside in the state of California. Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage. The work mode can be changed based on business needs.
