SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller will be responsible for oversight of all finance, accounting and reporting activities. As the number-two executive to the CFO, the Controller will be involved in supporting presentations to the board and finance committee while working closely with the senior leadership team. The Controller will lead the day-to-day management of a $31 million operating budget and supervise a team of accountants, including functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grants administration.
There’s heavy emphasis on financial reporting and annual audit compliance, requiring this role to focus narrowly on the timeliness, accuracy, and completeness of financial statements, reports and a timely and clean annual audit.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversees all accounting operations, including pledge and grants receivable, payroll, cash management, accounts payable, fixed assets, deferred revenue, accruals, policies and procedures, and GAAP compliance.
- Supervises and provides oversight of the general ledger, and implementation of effective internal controls.
- Leads month and year-end close process including reconciliation of all sub-ledgers to the general ledger for all accounts.
- Oversees maintenance of the chart of accounts, accounting software modules and compliance to annual cost allocation plan.
- Supervises correct coding of receipts and expenses thus ensuring the integrity of financial information reported to stakeholders.
- Provides accounting expertise to develop and enter complex journal entries into financial management software.
- Manage organization’s compliance to procurement policies and procedures for the ordering and payment of goods and services.
- Works collaboratively with executive leadership and senior management team to prepare and submit grant applications and prepare the required invoices, claims and or drawdowns in a timely manner. Provide work papers and support documents in support of claims.
- Leads annual audit process including the verification and retention of all required schedules with clearly defined timelines and corrective action plans as needed.
- Commitment to recruiting, mentoring, training, and retaining a diverse team with the foresight and ability to delegate accordingly.
- Assists Chief Financial Officer with preparation, development and execution of annual budget to ensure accurate and reliable agency, departmental, and location (center-based) income statements with trend analysis and budget to actual variance.
- Maintain a calendar of deadline dates for key filings, grant applications and claim and invoice submissions, management report preparations and the annual report publication.
- Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Accounting, Finance or related discipline. CPA and/or MBA highly preferred.
- 8 + years of Accounting experience.
- Supervisory experience required.
- Preferred experience working in complex nonprofit environment with multiple programs with diverse funding streams, including local, state, and federal.
- Preferred experience with Blackbaud NXT or comparable cloud-based financial management system.
