Consultant, Environmental Technician (Mid-Level)
ERM is seeking a self-starting, dynamic Consultant, Environmental Technician to join our consulting firm in Ewing, New Jersey. This role is responsible for performing all tasks related to operation, and maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities located in New Jersey. Additional tasks will include data management using Microsoft Excel, support of other field projects including sampling of various environmental media. This is an excellent opportunity for a junior technician looking to advance his or her career level with a global sustainability leader.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associates degree or higher, preferred. Or the equivalency of 2 years related experience for every 1 year required education.
- Must possess a valid U.S. Driver's Operator's License.
- HAZWOPER 40-hour Training.
- New Jersey N-2 Wastewater license preferred, or willingness to attain.
- Hoisting license for loader and forks a plus.
- Plumbing license a plus.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Operate and maintain the facilities and equipment related to the wastewater treatment systems, sub slab depressurization systems, including cleaning of tray aerators, liquid and vapor phase carbon change outs, repairs to various pumps, valves & piping as needed.
- Prepare daily reports to ensure accurate reporting of system performance.
- Manage installation of remediation systems, including operation of a backhoe and forklift for trenching, conveyance piping installation, well vault construction, manifold assembly, flow meter and totalizer installation, and other associated tasks.
- Perform system media changeout and other system modification, optimization, and improvement tasks that include use of a forklift for safe relocation and placement of heavy equipment and supplies such as carbon/clay vessels, drums and supersacks of virgin and spent media, storage tanks, etc.
- Ability to carry out verbal and written instructions; i.e., standard operating procedures (SOP's), work orders, other documents, etc.
- Maintain work areas, tools, vehicles, and equipment in a safe and orderly condition and in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; inspects, cleans and performs routine maintenance on systems, and property; identifies and reports problems requiring additional repair and notifies supervisor of problems beyond scope of authority.
- Observe, record and evaluate system conditions, maintain and review operational and maintenance reporting logs and keep management fully informed of unusual conditions.
- Read P&ID’s and use facility operating procedures and equipment technical manuals to maintain and repair facility equipment and ensure equipment is operated within operating range.
- Read, understand and comply with all regulatory procedures. Take on specific tasks/responsibilities assigned in these areas.
- Perform duties related to handling hazardous materials and wastes, and spill prevention and control, as directed by management and in accordance with applicable regulations. Initial orientation and annual classroom training are provided, together with on-the-job-training, to demonstrate understanding of essential information for regulatory compliance and documentation.
- Collect, send for analysis and record water and wastewater samples for regulatory compliance and process control monitoring for proper operation of the systems.
- Assist with other tasks or projects as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills; communicate effectively (clearly, concisely and professionally) with internal customers.
- Must have the ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees.
- Must have basic computer skills including, but not limited to basic operations and manipulation of data on spreadsheets, and have the ability to remotely operate plant processes through computer controlled equipment.
- Ability to organize data (folders, files, tables, columns, other objects) logically to enable efficient, repeatable analysis;
- Demonstrate active listening skills required to understand the underlying objectives of data analysis and creativity required to select tools and design solutions/processes.
- Strong commitment to safety, including following established Health & Safety protocols.
- Effective organization/analytical skills; experience recording/writing detailed technical data and reports.
- Ability to multi-task, maintains flexibility, travel, and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated attributes to be a team player, eagerness to learn and grow, self-starter who takes initiative, versatile, and service-oriented mentality.
- Familiarity with engineering drawings (e.g., site plans, alignment sheets).
- Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to readily read, understand and accurately follow operating instructions both written and verbal.
- Possess the mathematical ability to perform calculations to determine various ratios, dosages, and volumetric calculations that are required for the operation of various treatment plants.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills, including attention to detail and accuracy, as well as a commitment to problem solving.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- May be subject to noise, wet and/or humid conditions, mechanical, electrical, gas exposure hazards, fumes, dusts, mists, gases and /or poor ventilation atmospheric conditions.
- Must be able to lift and move equipment in excess of 50lbs and the ability to work in confined spaces.
- Working condition include travel to work sites in the Tri-state area;
- This position requires the candidate to be available nights and weekends to adequately respond to system alarms as systems are in operation 24 hour/7-day.
For the Consultant, Environmental Technician (Mid-Level) position, we anticipate the annual base pay of $70,000 – $82,265 (USD). An employee’s pay position within this range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, and business or organizational needs. We also may have instances where compensation may be outside of the range, based on the factors noted above. This job is also eligible for an annual discretionary based performance bonus.
